UCL undergrad bsc economics difficulty

Hi, I’m in y13 and just received an offer for bsc econ at ucl. However I have not studied econ at all yet since my sixth form doesn’t offer the alevel econ course and I also don’t do further maths. I’m not sure how I feel about it now as I don’t think I know that much about the subject And I’m not confident at all as I’m quite disadvantaged compared to other applicants so I’m not quite sure what I should do. I do alevels bio maths and chem which is clearly not a very typical candidate. Im scared about the difficulty and just how different and new the course will be. Not sure whether I should just go for it or just reapply for something like medicine. Any advice will be appreciated . Thanks in advance

Congrats on your offer and sorry I can't answer your questions. Can I ask what your stats are please, predicted A level grades and GCSEs. My son has applied to UCL but hasn't heard back yet and is convinced he'll be rejected

All of the theory you learn in econ a-level will be repeated again at uni so you haven't missed out by not doing the a-level (the content isn't hard anyways). I don't think not having further maths will necessarily make things difficult since a lot of other people won't have done further maths. But econ at uni is very maths focused relative to theory.

Hi, could i ask you why you didn’t pick Further Maths? I also didn’t pick it and want to know if it’s possible to get in without it if your school offers it. Also congrats.

My school does offer it . I didn’t pick it as my school made it compulsory to sit alevel maths in year12 and when I was picking I was quite scared by that idea but honestly regret not picking it. And it’s defo possible to get in without fm even if ur school offers it

Is the first year of an economics course slightly easier if you've done a-level economics & FM, sure. But as others have said, you go over everything that you'll need to know again in first year.

So by the end of the first year, you'll all be up to the same standard, it's just a minority of the content for some will be revision rather than learning it for the first time. I did Maths & Economics at undergrad and by the end of the first year, there was no observable difference in economics ability between those who did it for a-level and those that didn't. Just means you might need to work slightly harder than others in the first year, that's all.
