EPQ musical - can i write one?

Sooooooo I'm a huge musical nerd, and I read a lot. I need to do my EPQ, and I want to compose something constituting a few peices from a musical. I would have it be based on the book Salt to the Sea (this might be a copyright issue but it wouldn't be for money so idk) or that one time when Caesar got kidnapped and made his kidnappers demand more for his ransom cuz he knew his self worth. I'm not sure if you can do that, but time isn't really an issue for me, so it would more be about can I do it than is it plausible. I plan to just do maths and sciences for A levels, so no worry of an overlap. Anyhoo, just curious if anyone can help me out and tell me if I can base it on a book or something historical.

You can write an EPQ on anything - you just need a question you can answer. It's recommended to do EPQs relating to something you want to do in the future (because you can talk about it in interviews, etc, put it on your CV) but you can do it anything (as long as its sensible).
I seriously doubt copyright applies to EPQs.
Are you planning on writing an essay or making an artefact?
You can 100% base it on a book but problems rise regarding sources. EPQ is a research task. It isn't like essays you've written at GCSEs, you gather resources and write about what you gathered, briefly forming your own conclusion. For the sake of convenience, i'd go for something historical.

always talk to a teacher/supervisor regarding these concerns
