Missed extension deadline-- what do I do?!!!

So I had to ask for an extension on an assignment for uni (im in 2nd year) because I have had a myriad of health problems + stress affecting my studies recently. I was granted a 7 day extension and thought that it would be enough time only a day later i woke up with COVID. COVID. I don't have access to a test and my drs is a train ride away so wasn't really a quick option either as i felt AWFUL (i've had covid three times before so thats how i know what it was- or at least it feels like it). Anyway I kept thinking id recover so spent the next week not eating much (ran out of food and takeaway is too expensive, genuinely felt too ill to go to the shops) and spending 12 hours a day asleep and the other 12 taking lemsip and cold & flu pills. Obviously i wasn't going to be able to do my assignment in this state (i did try all the time i promise) and everything i wrote made no sense and was NOT good. Anyway its the day before the assignment is due today and i did manage to drag myself to the shops, and try one last time at the assignment but its nowhere near complete. It's due at noon tomorrow. I am STILL SICK (silly at this point i know i just want to be well again ill never take not being in pain for granted). Technically I haven't MISSED the deadline but unless i pull the most productive all nighter youve ever seen while being sick with covid the deadline is not getting met.

So like... what do i do?? I emailed the module leader that gave me the extension and explained the situation. But i have no proof apart from how awful I look. Does it count as a 0 and i have to repeat the module/ year?! the uni website is vague and won't really give any info apart from I may have to repeat the year or module but also maybe not??

TLDR ive been academically defeated by horrifically timed covid. what do i do help T-T

Hey,

It sounds like you’ve had an incredibly tough time, and it’s completely understandable that you weren’t able to complete your assignment while being that unwell. The fact that you reached out to your module leader was definitely the right move. Hopefully, they’ll be understanding of your situation.

Since you’re still within the extended deadline, you’re technically not at the stage where you’ve missed it completely, so you still have options. If your University has a mitigating/extenuating circumstances process, that might be the best route to take. Even without an official test, you can still explain the situation, many universities understand that getting proof for illnesses can be tricky. If possible, see if you can get any supporting evidence, like emails to your lecturers, timestamps on unfinished work, or even a pharmacy receipt for the medication you had to take.

If your module leader doesn’t respond quickly, it might also be worth contacting student support, your academic advisor, or even your University’s wellbeing service (if they have one) to see what other options are available. At Salford, we have personal tutors who can help in situations like this, so your university might have something similar.

Try not to panic just yet, it’s very unlikely that this will immediately mean repeating a whole year. Worst-case scenario, there may be a chance to submit the assignment late with a penalty or resit it later. Universities generally don’t want students to fail due to circumstances beyond their control, so reaching out for help was the best thing you could have done.

For now, focus on resting as much as you can, pulling an all-nighter while still being unwell might make things worse. You’ve done the right thing by explaining your situation, so hopefully, your University will be able to offer you some flexibility.

Best of luck!

Most universities have late penalties, mine is -5% per day after the deadline (not counting weekends for some odd reason). You can then go challenge it at the examiners board at the end of the academic year and it MIGHT get removed, but there is no promise. Email your support office, personal tutor, module lead and the senior academic, and see what they say.

It also depends if it's a hard deadline or a soft deadline. A lot of my final year coursework has hard deadlines and there is absolutely no possibility of extensions as they basically say you should have put in contingency for being sick etc and done it early.

MitCircs application and failing that, an appeal. But you need to speak to Wellbeing/Student Support as matter of urgency.

It'd help if you'd spoken to a doctor, too, because otherwise all they have to go on is your word - have you spoken to a doctor or anything ike that?
