Plymouth university accommodation

Hello, I'm looking to start at Plymouth in September and wanted some recommendations about accommodation. I'm leaning towards private accommodation as its cheaper, specifically Beckley point and Astor house. Has anyone stayed in or know any pro/cons of either? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Hey there! 😄

As someone that stayed in halls for my first year, I wouldn't have any specific recommendations or much knowledge of some private providers but I would say it's good to look into a few things when considering options -

Cost is always an important factor (perhaps the most important one!)- There are a range of halls options for all budgets (i.e. some with shared facilities) and prices vary across the city for private providers.

Location- another key factor! Make sure you check where the accommodation is as some can be a bit of a walk away from campus if you don't mind that! Otherwise there are others closer by (including some halls being on campus itself).

Trust/security- Campus/halls are covered by 24/7 university security and the booking process is secure and trusted, so make sure you check with any private providers if this is also similar and whether they are trusted (if you're unsure, it's best to check they are legitimate or reputable before going ahead with booking).

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to reach out! 😊

Hello, thank you so much! If I were going to pick uni halls, is there a specific one you would recommend? Also was there anything that you would've liked to know before you booked your uni halls? Thanks again!

Hi I went to Plymouth uni and I stayed in radnor for my first year, we had absolutely no problems and couldn’t fault it at all! It’s super close to the uni and quite sociable because of the outdoor communal space. Also it was definitely kept clean and felt really safe. However I would also recommend Beckley as someone who knows people who lived there and I spent a lot of time there, they have great communal areas and the flats are always warm!! The rooms and bathrooms are really nice too.
Let me know if you want to know anything specifically

Thank you, that's really helpful! Are there any advantages/disadvantages of staying in the student village vs staying onsite?

Hi there 😊 No worries at all!

As far as halls go, I'd personally recommend Francis Drake as this is the one I've stayed in before and I haven't been in many of the others! It was recently renovated before I stayed in there for my first year and has nicely kept facilities with an ideal location on campus next to many of the buildings I use the most.

But most of the halls options are very similar, just in slightly different locations and with different options (e.g. single sex flats, shared bathrooms, ensuites).

Before booking university halls, I might have been interested in knowing more about the ResLife programme (you can check that out here) as well as the differences between them (which are minor but you can get a feel for this via the options on the halls website).

I would say living in the student village and on campus are very similar- the student village is just a 2 minute walk across one road so still has an 'on campus' ideal location and has a nice student community vibe. On campus, the two halls are even closer to uni buildings and lecture halls and still have a nice atmosphere with the SU being very near for music nights and events, with cafés nearby too.

Hope this helps and if you have any more questions just let me know! 😄

Hi, I also think there is very little difference between staying on campus vs the student village because of how close everything is! However I will say that student village seemed to be a bit more sociable than the on campus accom. I found that staying in Radnor I had everything I needed nearby and there was always something going on! There’s a co op right next door and the walk to aldi was so easy

I'd definitely agree with this! I stayed on campus but heard great things about the social life in the student village, and there are some really useful nearby shops (plus the mini shop on campus too and cafés!) But the distance is so minimal between the accommodation options that all the locations are ideal! 😄

Hey I’ve been staying in Astor for the past two years and will be also for next year. It close by town and only a 12 minute walk to uni, has a lot of amenities like a sky lounge and commons room/cinema room. Staff is amazing and I’d say Astor is quite nice socially. Very close to the hoe so if you like the waterfront you will love it. The only thing is you’ll be in a mixed flat, it won’t be just first years as anyone from any year can book but overall way more pros than cons

Hi! I’m currently living at Beckley Point and I strongly recommend that you do your research very carefully before choosing it. While the location is convenient and prices may seem reasonable, there are serious issues that many of us have experienced:

Security concerns: multiple incidents of staff entering rooms without notice or permission.

Maintenance issues: lifts has always been broken and remains unrepaired.

Mail problems: official government or company mail has been rejected or lost without explanation.

Bicycle thefts: high-value bikes have been stolen from inside the building, and staff were unhelpful.

Aggressive responses: when students raise concerns, some staff respond with legal clauses instead of solving the problem.

These are not isolated complaints several residents have reported similar things. I really wish I had known this before signing.

If you’re looking at private accommodation, I suggest you consider Astor House or other alternatives instead. Don’t be misled by brochures speak to current residents if possible.

Happy to answer questions if you want to know more.
