Pharmacy

Hi, I’ve been excited since I got an interview from a prestigious uni for pharmacy n I love chemistry but I haven’t been able to commit to dentistry/medicine, I like the bridge of pharmacy better. But my family dislike it a lot and say it’s a bad environment and it’s stressful, though the pay is good but can someone also wanting to do pharmacy give their insights or people who are doing the course or involved w pharmacy? I would appreciate honesty since I don’t want to be put off by what I love but also I want the best too!

Alevel I’m studying biology, chemistry physics predicted AAB. But ik with more work I can get three a’s. For GCSEs I got generally mediocre: maths:6, science 7,6, eng lit 8, eng lang 6, photog 6, french 5, geography 6, religious studies 8. I only applied to uni of Sheffield for pharmacy

Hiya! As a final year pharmacy student at Bath, hopefully I can provide a bit of insight

I think if you’re interested in chemistry, pharmacy is definitely a good fit for you. All our knowledge is basically unpinned by chemistry (and of course biology) so its integrated into a significant proportion of the degree.

I think that some pharmacy environments aren’t the best as they are very underfunded and overworked, especially with the political changes going on at the moment. However, there are a lot of different options of where you can work as a pharmacist, for example, hospital, community pharmacy, GP surgeries, prisons, vet surgeries, mental health units, so obviously you’d have a different experience at each. I do think it’s a huge benefit having so many areas you can choose from as it allows you to find the environment most comfortable and interesting for you.

The pay is good, but compared to doctors it’s not super generous. In sectors where you do similar work (I’m thinking GP surgeries, especially now we qualify as independent prescribers), this can seem unfair but of course they have done more intensive education and training. There are some positions with much higher pay though, and if that’s a priority for you I’d probably suggest community pharmacy or industry / business. In the other sectors the pay gradually increases with experience but does end up pretty reasonable after some years.

I’m just going to give some personal experience / opinions now. I really enjoy my degree but it is a big commitment. We have a crazy amount of content and skills to learn and end up with less free time than a lot of other students I know. However, I find that (almost) everything we are taught is interesting and it all seems relevant and important to know for our future careers. It sounds like you might enjoy the subject too, which is really important to motivate you to keep studying.

I feel like my 4 years at Bath have prepared me well to start work as a pharmacist in a few months, although of course it’s daunting. The uni has been particularly good at providing placements for us in a wide range of settings. This has helped to reinforce and motivate my learning but also helped to guide me on where to work after graduating. My first job will be split between hospital, GP and ICB, which are all sectors I’m interested in working in the long term.

I hope that was helpful. There is a lot to say about pharmacy so if you have any more questions or want more information, let me know!

Lauren, University of Bath.
