Herriot watt or Glasgow Cali

I am going to be studying mechanical engineering at university and am trying to pick between Glasgow Caledonian and Herriot Watt. I prefer the look of the course at Herriot watt, it is also rated better and ranked higher, which will be helpful for getting a job afterwards. I went to uni previously and dropped out after 1st year, so used a year of saas funding there. I’m currently at college doing my HNC in Mechanical Engineering, so once I have completed this year I will have used 2/5 years of saas funding. My offer from cali is for 2nd year entry which means I will be able to cover these 3 years with saas funding. However my offer from heriot watt is first year entry meaning I will have to fund one year myself. Also, I live in Glasgow so Cali is much easier to get to. Any help or advice would be much appreciated thanks 🙏

Hi, I’m trying to pick a uni between cali and Herriot watt. I prefer the look of the course on Herriot watt, and it is rated better and ranked higher, which is helpful for getting a job after for mechanical engineering. That’s what I’m studying, however I went to uni before straight after school and dropped after 1st year, I’m not at college and enjoying studying mechanical engineering so want to study it at university, however I’ll now only have 3 years of funding left. art at 2nd year of the course if I go to cali so will have enough to complete it without having to pay. Also I live in Glasgow so Cali is easier to get to. But I just like the idea of heriot watt more and think it will be better for me as a student and for my future. Also went to Cali before and I didn’t like the feel of it, but I know that’s a silly priority, please help me decide!

From everything you've written (except a bit I couldn't understand in the middle) Herriot-Watt seems like the better choice.

The bit I couldn't follow is where you said "I’ll now only have 3 years of funding left. art at 2nd year of the course if I go to cali so will have enough to complete it without having to pay." After re-reading this a few times I think you're saying that you left your previous studied during the second year, so used-up two years of funding. Hence there wouldn't be sufficient funding to cover all four years of the course at Herriot-Watt. Have I got that right? But wouldn't that also be true at Glasgow Caledonian?

Thanks for replying, sorry half of that makes no sense😂 I wrote it half asleep on my laggy laptop without checking it over. Basically, what I meant to say is once I have finished this year at college I will have used up 2/5 years of my saas funding. I have an offer from cali for 2nd year entry, meaning I will only have to fund 3 years so won’t have to pay any tuition fees myself. My offer from Heriot-Watt is 1st year entry so I will have to pay a year of tuition fees myself. Also I live in Glasgow so commuting to Heriot-Watt would take 1-2 hours depending on if I drive or get the train. In comparison it would take 20-30 mins to get to cali. Hopefully that clears things up now, thanks 🙏

It does, thank you. Unfortunately, it makes choosing between them much harder!

There are clearly advantages to the Heriot-Watt option ("I prefer the look of the course", "it is rated better and ranked higher", " I just like the idea of heriot watt more", "think it will be better for me as a student and for my future"), and to the Glasgow Caledonian option (2nd year entry, 20-30 mins commute). However, only you can decide how valuable / important each of those factors is to you.

Try writing down two a list of "features" (commute time, cost of study, reputation, look of course, etc.) and assign a weight to each (i.e. how important is each feature). Then assign two scores to each feature, one for Heriot-Watt and one for Glasgow Caledonian. Then multiply each score by the weight, and sum the totals for each uni. Which ever university scores highest is "best" according to the criteria which are important to you.

Thats a great idea to score them like that, thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it. Will make the decision a bit easier hopefully!
