COMPSCI at Lancaster VS York - idk which to pick

I currently hold an offer from both York and Lancaster

I thought that York was much better than Lancaster so I put it as a 'back up' choice incase I didn't get accepted into York but I was told that the Lancaster is miles ahead of York and that it would be stupid not to pick Lancaster instead of York. All the research I've done seems to put both these unis more or less the same and ive gotten nowhere

Overall here's the things im looking for:
- How rigirous the curriculum is, i want to go to university to learn before getting a job
- Graduate prospects
- Sports and societies
- how easy it would be to land a part time job

idk any computer science students from both these unis? i've also asked people on unibuddy and both lancaster and york students just be glazing their unis icl

also I've heard that lancaster as a city is kind of empty or 'mid' especially compared to york, and if anybody has attended lancaster lmk how the city feels like and stuff

thank u
@Lancaster Student Ambassador and @University of York do you want to give your insights without 'glazing' your unis, as OP has requested?

Hey,

I studied at York but I didn't take Computer Science, so I can't give any insight into the specific course. However, we have some student blogs from Computer Science students that are worth checking out!

I loved living and studying in York and had a great time during my degree - if you have any questions about the city or campus, drop me a message!

Hi Hazel,

how easy is it to get a part-time job at York and how are the sports facilities on campus like?

Hi @hjhgyh

While I am not a computer sci student, I can answer the other parts of your questions. To find out about the comp sci specific curriculum you can ask our students directly here Ask a Student - Lancaster University
Lancaster University's computer science course is 16th for graduate prospects in The Complete University Guide (2025)! Again, asking the comp sci students directly can answer specifics about that such as companies etc.
There are over 150 sports and societies you can get involved in at uni with such a wide range from baking to lego to rowing societies. You can find the full range of societies here: Groups @ Lancaster Students' Union. I've been part of the mountaineering society and archery society and I really enjoy them, everyone is definitely very friendly. As part of the mountaineering society, I went to climb some mountains in Scotland which was hard but a memorable experience!
I have multiple job roles with the uni so there are definitely many opportunities to find a part time job. Some are more flexible than others so apply to ones that suit your needs/wants and I've found its pretty easy to land a part time job.
The town is small but I find that fairly nice as everything I need is quite close together. Williamson park is near town and is a pretty park to walk around and have picnics. There is a Vue cinema, theatre (the Dukes), clothes shops, cafes, bars, pubs, nightclubs, escape rooms etc in town. Overall it isn't massive but there's definitely things to do in town for leisure. I've also had days out to Manchester which is only an hour away by train and cost about an tenner. I come from London so visiting Manchester gives me the city feel I am used to but I do like the smaller feeling of town in Lancs for uni.

Hope that helps,
Rachel -Lancaster Uni Student ambassador.

Hi Hazel,

Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch again! I've tried to answer your question below:

How easy is it to get a part-time job at York?

York is full of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, so there are plenty of opportunities for part-time work based in the city. You could look on Indeed to get an idea of what jobs are available and what the pay is like. There are also opportunities for working with the University, such as being a student ambassador and a student content creator.

When I was a student, I used to earn some extra money by tutoring Biology and Chemistry GCSE online. I found doing this really rewarding, and very flexible as I could plan the lesson times around my own schedule. I was also a student ambassador, which was great for me as I could just pick up shifts whenever I had time.

The level of part-time job you'll be able to manage will depend on a couple of things: the number of contact hours per week in your degree, studying commitments, social commitments and how much rest time you need. I studied Biology and I personally couldn't manage a regular part-time job alongside my degree as I had quite a lot of contact hours and I needed quite a lot of downtime to myself or with friends to keep my mental health on track. So, I took on part-time roles that I could totally fit around me, like tutoring and being a student ambassador.

What are the sports facilities like on campus?

The University of York is a campus-based university which is split into two sites, Campus West and Campus East. It's only a short 20-minute walk to get from West to East (or vice versa!). There are two main sports facilities on our campus: one on Campus West (York Sport Centre) and one on Campus East (York Sport Village). These have a range of facilities including: state-of-the-art gyms, floodlit 3G pitches, a competition-standard pool, a velodrome, a cycle track and lots more! You can explore the full list of facilities on the York Sport website.

You can also get involved in college sport, at either a competitive or social level. And there are loads of sports clubs run by York Students' Union that you can join as well.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to add them to this thread!
Hannah 😀
