Im in my final term of uni and I want to drop out. I'm getting bad grades and I dont know why. University of Manchester doesnt give me any help. I hate it here. I want to drop out, cus i dont want to have to live with a terrible grade.

Hey,

That sounds really tough, and I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. Being in your final term and struggling with grades can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you don’t feel like you’re getting the support you need.

Before making any big decisions, it might be worth reaching out to any support services your uni has, even if it feels like they haven’t been helpful before. At Salford, we have academic support teams, personal tutors, and mental health services, and Manchester might have something similar. Sometimes, even just talking things through with someone (whether a tutor, advisor, or even a careers team) can help put things in perspective.

It might also be worth checking if there’s any way to improve your grades, are there resit options? Can you get feedback from lecturers to understand what’s going wrong? If you’re struggling with motivation or stress, sometimes study techniques, support groups, or even just a change in environment can help.

If you really feel like dropping out is the best option, that’s completely valid too, but make sure you’ve explored all your options first. You’ve made it this far, and even if your grades aren’t where you want them to be, a degree (even with a lower classification) is still a huge achievement and can open doors. Employers often care more about skills and experience than the specific grade itself.

Whatever you decide, you’re not alone in this, and there are always options, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. Try to reach out to someone who can help, and take it one step at a time.

Best of luck!

yes

Being honest I think dropping out now would be a very silly idea.

If you drop out without finishing your degree now you will have a much harder time getting a job than if you have a degree with a poor grade. You would also have problems with student finance if you don't finish this degree and then choose to start another as you have used up 3 years of the 5 years of funding that student finance will grant.

It is only a few more months, I would just suck it up and be resilient. Then get your piece of paper and move on, too much loss to not get that certificate now.

It’d be a real shame to drop out now it’s March you’ve got only a few weeks until the exams and once you’ve done them you’re done you don’t have to do anything else and you’ll have a degree it might not be a first but you did it.

Hiya!

I’m really sorry to hear that you're feeling this way. As a third-year student myself, I completely understand how overwhelming things can get, it’s tough when you feel like you're not getting the support you need.

Arslan from the University of Salford has shared some great advice, and I just wanted to add - have you spoken to anyone about this? Even if it’s not someone from the university, reaching out to a friend, fellow student, or family member might help. Sometimes, just talking to someone you trust can give you the confidence to seek support from a staff member, or if it's someone whose opinion you validate perhaps they can provide a fresh perspective.

I know it might not feel like it right now, but the university should care about your well-being and academic success. No one wants to see you struggle or receive low grades. You’re so close to the finish line, honestly it sounds like it only should be a few more months. Have a look at exploring some available resources or talking to someone 🙂

You're not alone in this, and you are so close

Manchester has some fantastic resources for help at both School and broader institutional levels. Does your academic advisor know that you are struggling so? I would recommend a conversation with them at the earliest convenience.
