Student finance for switching courses

I am in my first year of uni. If I switch courses from natural sciences to biomedical science, I would repeat first year biomed. And then I can switch to medicine for 2nd year if I do well. How would this affect my student finance?

Hi there, how many years have you previously studied since leaving Further Education? Is this your first? Thanks, Jason

Hi there, If you complete 1 year (Natural Sciences) then switch to 1 year Biomedical Science, then switch again to Medicine (Undergraduate level) (The courses are normally 5 or 6 years long), by the time you reach the Medicine course your remaining entitlement would look like this:

New course (in years): 5 years
+
Additional Year (for resits if required): 1 year
-
Previous Years Studied: 2 years
=
(5+1-2=4) 4 years remaining entitlement for to study.

So this would allow for years 5*, 4, 3 and 2 to be supported, however, year 1 your tuition fees would be blocked, but you may still be eligible for maintenance loan and supplementary grants.

*In the 5th year and any subsequent years of the course students are entitled to an income-assessed NHS bursary and, therefore, we award them the reduced rate of maintenance loan only.

Thanks, Stephen.
