Why would your gender make a difference whether you "can" apply as a mature student to university?

If you're over the age of 21 when you apply you're considered a mature applicant whether you consider yourself a "mature student" or not.

Bear in mind though you're only considered an independent student by student finance (i.e. your SFE loans are assessed only against your own household income and not your parents) if you're over 25.
