Hello,

It's great that you are starting a PhD, well done and good luck with the wonderful researching journey ahead of you. I'm not sure what department you are going to be working in, and I'm sorry but I don't have any experience of subjects outside of English. However, I can speak from my own experience, and personally I treat my research as a full time job hours, so I start working at 9am, have a break mid morning, then I carry on working until lunch time, have my lunch, then work during the afternoon until 5pm with a break in the middle of the afternoon. Obviously I have flexibility in this, so some days I might be really productive and if I want to finish something I might carry on in the evening too.

Generally, I have the weekend off for my hobbies as I think it's really important to take breaks away from working. However, if I've had days off during the week and want to catch up a bit I will work during the weekend sometimes.

Once you start the PhD you will find yourself developing a rhythm for working and the method that suits you the best but I would say staying organised and focused is key and to do this, I personally need to regularly work for consistent chunks of time each day. I'm sure your supervisor will have lots of advice in respect of how much time you need to devote each day for the study and research though.

Best of luck and enjoy!
