Living costs at Durham University

Is 460 pounds per month enough to live in Durham as a undergraduate student (excluding cost of accommodation)? With the cost of accommodation (I plan to stay at a self-catered college at Durham) my budget would be 1250 pounds per month.

If you don't socialise a lot, £460/month would be enough. Uni accommodation will be £184/week in 2025/26 (about £736/month), that makes up to about £1,200/month.

Assuming that you don’t have significant public transportation costs, you’re probably living better than most students with that kind of money.

I spend way less than that per month without budgeting.

The costs of necessary food and drink are estimated to be around £320 per month. If you spend less on transportation and entertainment, £460 is enough to cover your monthly expenses at Durham University.

No worries. Yeah I probably spend around £300 without budgeting (and it can include unexpected costs) but then again, I don’t go out clubbing or drinking.

Hello!

I'd definitely say yes in my personal experience! As a Snowman (John Snow is a self-catered college), I would say you likely wouldn't have to seriously budget whilst in university as long as you remain frugal. I think you'll be perfectly able to join in college events (though I would recommend budgeting for the 'big expenses' like train tickets, college/society balls etc.)

I hope this helps!
