Tavistock and Portman M7

Hi everyone! I had my interview for the M7 (Perinatal, child, adolescent and family work: a psychoanalytic observational approach) last week and was offered an unconditional place on the daytime course this week! I've firmly accepted and can't wait to get started.

Just wondering if anyone else has applied or is thinking of applying. Would love to chat to others who will be joining me on the course and I'm also happy to offer advice about applications or the interview. :h:

If anyone who is already doing or has completed this course happens to read this - I'd love to pick your brain about reading lists too!

Thanks!

Hi congratulations, I too received an unconditional offer to the Saturday Course.

I was hoping to apply for a post grad loan to fund this however they will only offer if i complete all 3 years and complete the masters. I hope to leave in year 2 to pursue my studies.

Would love to hear of any options.
Thanks

Hey! Congrats to you too! Is this your first postgraduate course? If so, you can apply for Student Finance, which is what I'll be doing. I'm not sure if we'll be entitled to the full amount as the course is part time but that should definitely help.

Congratulations on getting an interview! Which one are you applying for?

Obviously your interview will be different to mine as we’ve had different experiences but this is a little summary of mine, hope it helps and if you have any further questions, let me know!

I had Alex Datnow for my interview who was lovely. I googled her and found out she is a child psychotherapist which is what I hope to do so she was a great person to speak to. The interview was a really nice chat and while formal, I felt quite at ease. She asked me why I wanted to do the course and why Tavistock. I’d been to both the virtual and in person open days so could speak at length about that!

In my opinion she was looking to see if I was prepared to do the course. She spoke about it being a challenge so I spoke about how I’m prepared to challenge myself, sit in the uncomfortable because change is uncomfortable but it’s how we improve, etc etc. Talked about how if I did struggle, the Tav seems super supportive as many students mentioned at the open day. She also seemed to want to discover if I’m open minded and reflective. We talked about how I hope to be a child psychotherapist but this course isn’t just ticking a box for me on my path to that career, it’s all about the journey, and it’s important that it feels right, not just a rush to get to the end goal, which seemed quite important to her.

The main thing I’d recommend preparing is an example of where applying a psychoanalytic approach helped you. I used an example from working with children and this was the only part of the interview I dwelled on afterwards. I’d recommend you make sure you have a grasp of what the terms psychoanalytic and unconscious mind means, even in their most basic form.

She seemed keen for me to ask questions at any point but having done my research and the open days, most of my previous questions had been answered there so instead I asked her a bit about being a child psychotherapist and also recommendations for reading material, which was very useful.

And that’s pretty much it! Hope this has been helpful! Best of luck for tomorrow, you’ve got this!

Thank you! I’m so excited to start. 😊 I really enjoyed the process actually. I did my research - online and in person open day - and applied early. The waiting was the hardest part. I submitted a personal statement and secured two references and then was offered an interview. Then shortly after that I was given my place.

If you are considering applying I’d recommend applying ASAP as the deadline is the end of June. Definitely catch an open day if they’re offering any more, I found speaking to the lecturers and current students very helpful. They’re all very passionate which made me certain about this course over others.

Hi! Could I ask how long it took for them to respond to your application? 🙂 Thank you

Submitted my application on 4th of January. At the virtual open day in November I was told submitting early like I did meant I should expect an interview by February. My references were submitted on the 10th of January. Went to the in person open day in the beginning of February, a bit anxious that I hadn’t heard anything. Another prospective student asked the lead tutor of M7 in our group session as she also hadn’t heard and the lecturer seemed confused as they’d started interviewing. After the open day I emailed student admissions and was told they had a backlog to work through and I’d hear within 3 weeks. I was then invited to interview on the 24th of Feb and could choose when my interview was. I could either choose the following week or a month or two later - I chose the next week! Had my interview and received my offer the next day.
Looking back now, it wasn’t really such a long time to wait. Exactly 2 months between submitting my application and receiving my offer. But the waiting felt excruciating 😂 poor student admissions have probably blocked me after all the emails I sent.

Hi, I have my interview scheduled in mid-may and I'm rather nervous! I've been working for a year in a school since completing my undergrad in Psychology and I'm worried that my knowledge in terms of theory has got a little rusty! How in depth did they go on that side of things?

Congrats on your interview! Don’t be worried at all, they really didn’t go into it at all. All I was asked is when a psychoanalytic approach helped me in my work. I work in a primary school so gave an example. That was all really! Fingers crossed for you!

Hi, congratulations on your unconditional offer! I submitted my application for the M7 course two weeks ago and have just received an email inviting me for a consultation to discuss my application. I’m not sure if this means an interview? I will confirm my attendance anyway, but I’m just a bit worried does a consultation mean they have concerns about my application, or is it just how they rephrase it.
