I think the prospects are decent enough overall. Although some engineers from other disciplines will know a little bit about materials relevant to the equipment, machines or structures that they are involved with, you really do need specialised education and training in the field to become an actual materials engineer. Materials engineers can be found in virtually all industries, since everything engineers design and build is made from some sort of material. However, at the same time, many companies will have few materials engineers relative to other disciplines, and may not recruit materials engineering graduates each year, so you'll probably see less available roles compared to the other disciplines.

Hi there,

I don't study materials but have many peers in their final year of studying materials all over the UK, because of how many important applications there are with materials engineering all of them have a great graduate role lined up for them next year!
Nearly every manufacturing or other field of engineering such as automotive, nuclear, mechanical, civil or aerospace require materials engineering in industry so whilst there might not be a huge amount of adverts for solely manufacturing engineers there is often the option to apply anyway with the materials degree.

Hope this helps

Hiya,

While I do not study materials, I have a few friends who are currently studying/ recently graduated from Material Science. Currently, a few are doing their masters and one is undertaking a PhD. The University of Sheffield helps students improve their job prospects by adding placements into their degrees. If you take the MEng integrated masters for Materials, you will take an 8-12 week placement during your 3rd year.

There are a range of different industries to work in and you can find out more from current students by attending an open day/ offer holder day.

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions!
