What makes children recalcitrant in our communities

Dare I say that is simply human nature to want to rebel and to stand out; doing whatever you can to be 'unique' or different and as we age we merely realize that its just not worth it. It's much easier to follow the rules because of consequences that you now fully understand. So maybe what makes children any different is that they have much less to lose?
Following a similar train of thought, you could argue that nobody just wants to take an answer for what it is, we all want to know the whys and the what ifs but as we get to know it we are seen as less 'recalcitrant' in the eyes of society.
