hi! currently in year 10 and i was wondering what you did to study and revise effectively? i know that some studying methods are better for some subjects over others, but if you could give me any advice, that would be great!

hi! so in year 10 term 1 and 2 i didnt really know how to revise effectively so every weekend i would make notes in these huge notebooks about the content we covered that week (for everything except maths, english and arabic). this might work for you but personally, once i made the notes i never looked at them again lol. all this really helped with was that writing down the content forced me to initially process it, and i had a bank of notes accessible but this wouldve been much more effective if i made my notes in flashcard form, so that it was a resource that actually tested me if that makes sense (theres also so many flashcard decks already out there so you dont even need to make your own). so after i figured this out i just would make flashcards for content heavy-subjects like geography, compsci and sciences.

for maths i honestly didnt have to do that much but just doing as many papers as you can is the best way to get better. if its something u struggle with i recommend literally doing every single paper available but make sure to save a good chunk for y11! id say the same for sciences but theres fewer papers out there so do as many topic questions on pmt or savemyexams in the months leading up to your exams before you start grinding out past papers

for english, my biggest advice is to do as well as you can on your coursework (if you have coursework) so theres less pressure on you to score highly in the exam. but for exams, essay plans were my best friend!! my texts for eng lit were of mice and men and anthology poetry so for each popular theme or character or poem pairing, pre-plan a topic for each paragraph and a few quotes to go with it (no point trying to remember complex analysis but if you struggle with analysis on the spot then maybe plan some brief analysis too). this means you dont waste a lot of time thinking about what to write and you can get start writing straight away. i did the same for the non-fiction eng lang texts but i only did this around 1-2 months before my exams, and i stuck these on my wall so looking at them everyday meant i started to memorise them

in general though, try not to procrastinate making resources like flashcards / mindmaps to like march of y11. consistently making resources in y10 and early y11 will help you soooo much in the longrun and save you so much time so you can actually start doing questions leading up to your exams. hope this helped a bit and lmk if you want any more subject-specific advice

What are you wanting to do after school at uni?
And how much studying daily were you doing to get these grades?

Hi! Firstly, congratulations!! Secondly, I having a feeling this thread is going to get popular very quickly!!

How did you get nines in triple science, computer science and in Arabic? What was your motivation like and how often did you revise?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions!!

Pls helpp bc i'm so scared about how I'm going to revise in the last months, especially during gcses and I need to find effective ways to revise! Also do u have any tips for physics and chem especially paper 2🙏!!!
Please respond, I'll deeply appreciate it 🙏!!

im planning to study physics at uni in the uk hopefully!!

throughout y10 i would mainly do hw during the week and then friday night probably about 1-2 hours of revision, nothing at all on saturday, then maybe 2ish hours on sunday? this was mostly making resources like flashcards and notes (although i stopped doing that in y10) and saved me so much time to do ppq's in y11. towards y10 end of year exams this probably ramped up to around 1 hour daily during the week and 2-3 hours per day on the weekend

y11 term 1 was basically the same and i distinctly remember doing zero revision the entire winter holiday as a final rest period so i wouldnt end up burning out lol. my heavy revision with ppq's and reviewing flashcards started around mid-march with a few hours everyday, and when study leave came around i was hitting 30 hour weeks on flora haha. so essentially doing a little bit consistently during y10 and the start of y11 makes the main revision so much easier! lmk if you have any other questions

thank you so much!! and no worries at all haha happy to help

for arabic, im a native speaker so i honestly didnt have to revise at all for listening and reading, and for writing i remember doing one practice paper a day the few days leading up to the exam. speaking was a challenge though because i struggled not to revert to my dialect!! so for my exam board the speaking section was split into 3 segments. for roleplay and picture-based task, i just practiced the format and did examples with my friends who were also doing the exam, but u could also do this with parents if they speak arabic too. for the conversation, i made flashcards for every single question and prepared answers - if you can think on the spot you might not need to do this but i struggled coming up with complex and creative structures under pressure. i practiced these flashcards for like 2 weeks and i would also highly recommend recording yourself saying them outloud on voice memos and listening to it whenever youre on a walk or on the way somewhere! if youd like i can share the document i used for speaking which had my prepared answers and then also the format for roleplay and the photocard

compsci was honestly my hardest subject but i made flashcards for all the theory topics and took answers straight from mark schemes. esp for the cambridge exam board they are so so specific with mark schemes so when youre making resources take EVERYTHING from mark schemes - my teacher made these booklets for each topic with every question there had been on that topic which i can also share if youre doing cambridge! then in the month before the exam i did every single past paper out there which id defo recommend for compsci

for science in y10 i wrote out notes for every topic, which ended up not really being that useful and was wayyy too time consuming, so in y11 i would just quickly make a google doc of notes summarising the textbook for each topic (you can just use someone elses' condensed notes), and then starting from mid-march i did past paper questions (from pmt and savemyexams) using the notes if i didnt know a question, kind of like an open book test. i would also keep every long-answer question's markscheme that i got wrong in a flashcard deck that i was always looking over. then leading up to the exams i just did past papers and marked them! hope that helps but lmk if you want any more advice on anything!! i replied to someone else about how often i revised so check out my reply above^^

thank you!! my heavy revision started in march, by that time i had already made all my resources like flashcards (except for english lit which i ended up cramming) so i started doing past paper questions from pmt and savemyexams. then around mid-april i started actually doing past papers, usually 1 each for 3 different subjects a day (although i started way earlier for econ and english bc theyre essay subjects). during my actual exams, if i had multiple exams a week i would do a bit of each subject each day with a bigger focus on a specific subject the day before that subject's exam. by this point all my revision was past papers so it wasnt all that time-consuming

as for specifically chem paper 2, a lot of it is memorisation so if ur doing aqa make sure you know the flame test colours, tests for ions, the haber process + wastewater treatment 6 markers, and reactions of alkenes / alcohols super super well!! for physics paper 2 my biggest issue was forces and electromagnetism so i watched cognito's videos on those and did their questions and it just clicked for me. for the space topic, id say just memorise the 6 marker mark schemes for questions about star life cycles and stuff. but never try to memorise something without actually understanding it! but see my reply to ⓁⒶⒾⒷⒶ as well

What grades did you get in the feb mocks?? and i am asking because i hav been stuck on 7s on quite a while and now i am essetially freaked out cause i really want higher grades than tht lik at least 8s, and i am not sure what to do with the remaining time, like i am doing topic questions from pmt for all of them, but i am not clearly sure on how to do it, lik do i revisit the ones i did wrong, and what to do with the ones i got right?

Thank you!! For eng lit and essay based subjects would u suggest doing past papers or would u suggest looking at questions and making plans for the questions - so eg. a question abt Mr Birling - plan out the quotes and analysis. What did u do on days u didn't have exams and how did u not burn out! Did u wake up early every day?

i got all 9s in my feb mocks too, for ppq's definitely go over the ones you get wrong and make flashcards where u write down the markschemes of ones u get wrong and constantly test urself on those. if youre getting ones right now and its not just questions youve memorised then chances are youll get them right in 2 months' time so i think dont bother going over those. does that make sense?

unless u struggle with analysing on the spot, writing out entire past papers is probably a waste of time, maybe do a few the days before the exam but no need to make every one a full past paper. definitely make essay plans for each question and plan out quotes + some brief analysis if u think u need it

on days i didnt have exams i would mostly revise for the ones that coming week, and i think the main reason i didnt burn out is bc i consistently did a little bit of revision for most of y10 and early y11, and then i did zero revision over the winter break so i could fully rest and reset. and then my actual heavy revision started near the end of march so it was only like 2 months of proper proper revision? honestly when u start exams u get so relieved after each one is over so i personally didnt burn out during exams i just started caring less LOL

Yes thank you, i get what you mean, but is it possible to make the change too the 7s to lik 8s and 9s? in such a short time? , because for physics paper 2 i had done all the pmt topic queastions and geniually thought i was going to at least get a 8 but i came out with a 7. so i am very sort of scared i might not even get lik the grades i really want.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! THIS IS SO HELPFUL!!

Based on your other post about how often you revise, I don't know why but I always thought doing as much revision as possible is the only way to get all 9s. Maybe it's just my school but we have exams every three months so by the time I am gradually recovering from my burn-out, exam season rolls around again! :banghead: Was your school like that too? I am not in Year 11 but the Year 11s at my school get their topic lists in the winter holidays and then have mocks in January or February when they return so they kind of have to revise; did this happen with you? Anyways, :ta:for proving me wrong.

Also, about those Computer Science Notes, I was wondering if you would be happy to share them! I don't mind if you change your mind about it though.

Well done once again; I am sure whatever you do in the future you will be immensely successful!!

we only had proper mocks in december and then a few paper 2's in feb/march so it wasnt too bad, but also having mocks close to ur exams can be a good thing since everythings so fresh in ur mind so u dont have to revise it too hard. and yes ofc ill dm u the flashcards and booklets when i get to school. and thank you soo much im sure ull do great in life considering how dedicated u are in y10!!

yes you definitely can, if ur getting 7s and 8s its probably not bc u dont know the content, but bc of exam technique so id practice 4-6 markers as hard as u can if ur not getting 6/6 on those. do u think u struggle with time management or anything like that?
