Ludwig Maximilian University - IB Student

’m currently planning to apply to the Dentistry program at LMU Munich, and I have a question regarding the IB Mathematics requirement.

I’m taking IB Mathematics Standard Level (SL) and am wondering if that is sufficient for admission to the Dentistry program, or if I need to have Higher Level (HL) Math. I understand that HL Math would be more challenging, but my focus is on HL Biology, HL Chemistry, and HL German as they are more directly related to the program.

Has anyone here applied to the Dentistry program at LMU Munich, or can you share any insights regarding the math level required? Did you take SL Math or HL, and did it affect your application?

I would really appreciate any guidance or advice, cause I'm really frustrated

Hi, I’m by no means an expert in application processes, but I do have some knowledge of German universities. I looked into the admission requirements at LMU and the IB requirements for university entry in general. Since German universities are regulated at the state level—in LMU's case, by the state of Bavaria—you’ll need to check the specific requirements set by Bavaria. Here is the link, and I added a short translation (by Chat GPT) of the most important points:

However, I would recommend that you write to the admission team of LMU to verify this information. Good luck!

Among the six examination subjects of the "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International" (IB), the following subjects, as designated by IB terminology, must be included:

Two languages at level A or B (at least one of which must be a continued (foreign) language as "Language A1, 3" or "Language B HL2").

A natural science subject (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).

Mathematics (Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL, or Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL6).

A social science subject (History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Business and Management, Social Anthropology, or Global Politics).

...
Starting from the 2025 examination session, the three subjects that must be taken at the "Higher Level" as part of the "International Baccalaureate Diploma/Diplôme du Baccalauréat International" must include either a language, mathematics, or a natural science subject, as specified in section 2 a), bullet points 1 to 3 (see above).
