Startup culture across universities in UK/Europe

What is the startup culture like in universities in UK/Europe. Are there any universities that are particularly good in supporting entrepreneurs? or any that attract more business-minded people?

I am thinking of applying for Oxford in maths as a degree but I’m worried about this being too academic. I am also open to studying in Europe, especially Germany.

When I say “too academic” I mean that the university or college will not have facilities (or have very limited facilities) to support businesses

Hi @Oliver Pryce ,

It's great to see your interested in starting a business. I'd love to share with you my experience with starting a business with the support of my university.

At the university of central Lancashire, there is a dedicated department to help students start up their own business. This support may include:

Funding - Personally I was granted £600 towards my business, this was a great help as it provided the funding to buy a heat press machine!

Regular meetings for advice - I was walked through the process of creating a business plan, registering my business and provided an abundance of advice of marketing, product creation and more.

Dedicated space - You can be provided with a dedicated desk space for you to run your business from on campus, alongside using the meeting rooms, board rooms and having 24 hour access.

Open to everyone - You do not need to be a business student to use this service, you can be taking any course.

If you value entrepreneurship at university, I recommend researching schemes university run for support. At the University of Central Lancashire, there is a strong entrepreneurial culture, in fact we have one to best entrepreneurial university of the year in 2023. Personally, without the universities support and guidance I would not be in the position I am now to start a business.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (Business and Management)

I go to Imperial and it's really got a lot going on when it comes to entrepreneurship/innovation, although a lot of it is new and still a work in progress. Can't speak so much for other unis as I'm not aware
