Best Universities to study Medicine and then Biomedical Engineering

Hi guys, could you tell me which University is the “best” to study medicine? I aspire to being a General Surgeon and Forensic. Imperial, Cambridge, Oxford, London…

And for study Biomedical Engineering????

I will study physics, biology, and chemistry at Sixth form. First I aspire to study Medicine and once I finish I want to study Biomedical Engineering. Here is my question, do I need just study physics at sixth form? Or also maths at sixth form????

Why do you want to do both of these things? It is very very hard to become a surgeon of any kind out of medical school, you don't just get into the training, you have to apply and its something like 1/10 actually get it. Even after that, it is a minimum of 8 years training to be a surgeon, so by the time you actually are one you will be in your mid 30s at least.
Not to say what you are thinking is impossible, it is just these are two separate different careers and you would have to commit yourself to one rather than both.
Anyways, Cambridge, Imperial and UCL have good research programmes so aim for them.
Best of luck!

Hi! 😊

That’s such an exciting path you’re thinking about combining Medicine with Biomedical Engineering is a great way to bridge both worlds.

I’m currently studying Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering at City St George’s, University of London, and I took Maths, Physics, and Chemistry for my A-Levels. From my experience, those subjects gave me a solid foundation for the course.

If you’re deciding which A-Levels to take, it’s worth checking the entry requirements on each university’s website to see what they ask for some might prioritise Maths, some Physics, or both, depending on the course structure.

At City St George’s, the course is a mix of engineering, medical technology, and healthcare applications, and it’s really hands-on, with lab work and projects that relate directly to real-world healthcare challenges. It also puts a strong focus on career development, with opportunities to explore placements and industry links throughout your studies.

If you ever want to know more about the course or student life at City St George’s, feel free to ask happy to help! 😊
