The Student Room Group

Southampton accommodation undergrad. 2025

Hi! I’ve picked Southampton as my firm choice & now I’m unsure what accommodation to pick. The only one I’ve heard a lot about is Glen Eyre so I’m considering an en-suite room there but I need other options? I will be mainly based on Highfield campus for my course.

I’m looking for decent student life experience, maybe a gym close if not included (I think I saw Mayflower has one?) - but no necessary. And not too far from campus.

Does anyone have any info on what they know/ or have heard from past students? Thank you!

Hi,

Congratulations on your offer!

You can find out about all the accommodations available and their facilities here.

Glen Eyre is the closest to Highfield Campus. Wessex Lane accommodation is very close to campus also. Glen Eyre is a 10 minute walk away whereas Wessex Lane is a 20 minute walk away. Highfield Hall is also close by (just below Highfield Campus). However, this is part catered only. This is also a very small accomodation so if you were looking for the more social atmosphere, you are better off choosing the other halls.

With regards to a Gym, Mayflower Halls is the only one that has one. However, this is in part because Mayflower Halls is alot further out - it is in the city centre. There is a Gym on Highfield Campus in the Jubilee Sports Centre so it is quite convenient to get to from either Glen Eyre or Wessex Lane.

With the halls of residence, you will get a bus pass included. However, it is worth bearing in my mind, that if you live in Mayflower Halls, you would have to factor in more time for travelling. Whereas, with Wessex Lane and Glen Eyre, they are both easy to walk to.

There is also Archers Road accommodation. It is closer than Mayflower Halls. However, it is still quite a bit further than Glen Eyre or Wessex Lane.

Therefore, I recommend you choose either Glen Eyre or Wessex Lane. These two are fairly similiar. With regards to social life, Wessex Lane probably has the advantage of being situated close to Portswood and therefore, to the bars and shops. Glen Eyre does have extra facilities such as a computer room and a music room. Although there are computer rooms and music rooms that can be used on campus anyway. Another key difference is the prices. Glen Eyre is more expensive than Wessex Lane.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I highly recommend you click the link I sent as it will show you all the halls as well as an explanation of each. There are also links on it to virtual tours on YouTube of the different rooms. Moreover, if you have not done so already, I recommend you book onto an offer holder day. You will be able to visit a halls site as well as have any questions you have answered about the halls.

Best Wishes,

Hi there,

Congratulations on getting your offer from Southampton and I am glad you chose it as your firm! I would just add that, if you are looking for an en-suite, I am pretty sure Archers Road Halls is the cheapest option of all the Halls. I do think that it is less popular than other halls and is smaller but it is one of the more affordable options, and is a 5 minute walk from Lidl, which is much cheaper than Sainsbury's or Asda, etc. It is in the middle between campus and the city, which is also useful.

As someone who lived in Archers Road Halls (specifically Gateley Halls) for my first year, and will be living there again for my second year, the first negative that came to mind was the fact that there is no lift 😭. Gateley only has 3 floors (ground floor, first floor, second floor) but living on the second floor and having to walk up and down those stairs every time you leave/come back was just not very fun. It makes it very difficult when moving out/moving in or when going somewhere with a lot of luggage and having to do multiple trips up and down the 5 flights of stairs carrying an extremely heavy suitcase 😭😭.

In terms of the ensuite bathroom, it is not very big but it does the job. It comes with the toilet, sink, mirror above the sink with lighting, shower, toilet brush, a hook, a bar railing and a toilet paper holder (*does not come with a bin in the bathroom, just 1 in the room!). The shower pressure is quite low and you are not allowed to put your own shower head on it 😪.

A positive about Gateley, however, is that I have heard that the kitchens are much bigger than the ones in Romero. Although, the laundry room is in Romero and so, living at Gateley, you have to walk about 3 minutes down the road and cross the road to do your laundry. Also, there are 6 washing machines and dryers in the laundry room between everyone living at Archers Road Halls, but only one of the washing machines requires you to use your own detergent 👍️. And the reception is in Gateley, so people living in Romero have to come to Gateley to get their mail or speak to the reception.

The room itself is actually decently sized. It keeps quite warm in the winter, but does get very hot in the summer. It has a notice board, where you can pin things, a desk with lighting and many drawers. Each flat gets a hoover and an ironing board (**no iron**), a microwave, we had 2 ovens, 2 cupboards, a fridge and a freezer shelf each. Though, only having 2 sinks was never a massive issue, sometimes more than 2 people wanted to wash their dishes but couldn't.

The bus stops are about a 7-10 minutes walk from Gateley, and lots of bus routes have a stop at Archers Road, which is great.

I hope that wasn't a ton of information or irrelevant, and hope you found that all useful! I hope that you meet your grade requirements and are happy with the accommodation that you end up choosing and living in! 😊

Hi @Zigzagli,
While there are some sports facilities at Glen Eyre itself, such as the soports hall and a small fitness suite, the closest widely used gym to Glen Eyre would be in Jubilee sports centre on highfield campus. It has over 200 exercise stations with a designated area for weights training in the gym space itself. The centre also boasts a 25m swimming pool, a climing and bouldering wall and studio spaces that are used for classes and bookable sessions. You can find information about membership prices here if you're interested and there will plenty more information you can gather from those that run the centre during welcome week.
Best wishes for results day and starting southampton in September.
