The Student Room Group

what to do in year 12??

I’m a current alevel student in sixth form, i have barely any extra curriculars as I am just so scared to be involved and be around people! I study biology, psychology and business and really wanted to attend a summer school this summer but I’ve been so sick for the last month and only just realised that I’ve missed out on all sutton trust summer schools. Now i’m extremely worried as i really wanted to attend a Russell group university (ucl specifically) but I have nothing to add to my person statement!! Has anyone else gone through this and manage to get into a good university?? Do extracurriculars really matter or am i cooked lol

Join a sports team or try and sort some work experience depending on what you want to go to uni for. If you are applying to a less competitive degree, good grades combined with these would be enough to get you an offer.
Best of luck and what are you thinking of applying to?

You need supercurriculars which are relevant to whatever you want to study at university. Generally, reading articles and books or watching documentaries is very easy to use to explore a subject. Virtual courses are also a great idea. Joining any relevant clubs or societies is a good one to do. Visiting places of interest to do with the course like museums or talks on the subject.

unfortunately im unable to join sports teams due to health conditions, and i plan to have some science work experience by the end of year 12, but i feel like i need more? im not planning on applying to extremely competitive degrees - im not even entirely sure if university is right for me yet (my family are telling me not to go lol) but i’ve found a business in healthcare degree which seems like it suits all my subjects

The majority of Unis are far more interested in your academic interest and commitment than 'I do Ballet classes on Saturdays'. Suggestions for extra reading etc - good for all Unis :
Super-curricular suggestions | Undergraduate Study
Suggested Subject Resources | University of Oxford
and there are lots of interesting Moocs (free, short online courses from leading Unis) on sites like FutureLearn and Coursera
