University Arts London Fashion Imaging and Illustration (BA)

I got accepted into UAL for 'Fashion Imaging and Illustration', and I was wondering if any students who have taken this course have advice or any insights into the program.

I want to go into the area of concept art for films or video game art illustration. However, I'm worried that this course won't support me in creating a good portfolio for those kinds of industry jobs. Even if you haven't gone to UAL but have advice for this type of job it would be appreciated! thanks!
Do they teach clo3d or Marvelous Designer? That could be a useful transferable skill to a career in game development as it's commonly used by 3D character artists.

Generally I recommend to anyone keen on concept art to also learn 3d and some business/entrepreneurial skills as virtually the entire career path is short term contracts and freelance work. It is highly competitive and concept artists are usually only needed towards the beginning (concepting) of development.

Concept art is the mostly highly competitive area of an already intensely competitive industry. Be sure you have a backup plan.

Best of luck to you

Hi,

I am on this particular course, just finishing year 2 and love it so far. We are taught both analogue / traditional illustration as well as digital / 3d / animation. What I would say might be of interest to you is the additional diploma year they offer in Creative Computing or Apple development. It gives you grounding in creative coding, computational concepts and creative computing practice - they have a recorded open day on the course website (see the diploma one, not the full BA Creative computing course). When I attended the briefing, it seemed very versatile and flexible in terms of your style etc. useful to adjust portfolio to your suited style / requirements. You also graduate with an enhanced degree. I have chosen the CC path as besides the fact that it gives me such a broader skill set in addition to my course, the graduate exhibition looked so interesting, each student absolutely loved it and it convinced me to consider 🙂 Hope it helps!
