My student finance is not enough

Hi!
So currently I’m a first year studying in Liverpool. I get minimum student finance as my parents combined income is over 60k. Despite this, my parents cannot afford to support me. My student accommodation's rent is over £6000, and the minimum student finance is in the £4700 region. I have kept up with the previous two rent payments, however on this third and final one I don’t think i’ll be able to (I get £1600 from sfe and rent is £1900) I am genuinely so worried and so scared, I worked over summer and all my savings have almost gone, I’ve been trying to find a part-time job but it’s so difficult in the Liverpool city centre region. I had to quit my previous part time job as that was obviously closer to home. I’m trying so hard to budget but it feels like it’s doing nothing, i’ve even stopped going out for drinks, food and nights out with friends. I need to know if there is any way I can get my student finance increased? Is there any way I can get support? I feel so stressed..

In terms of student finance is pretty much no, they would expect your parents to top you up.
You may be able to speak to your uni but unfortunately a lot of uni support is also means tested. Have you spoken to your parents to about helping with the extra as a loan situation then you can pay them back?

Your parents will be saving money on food and bills now that you live away from home. Ask if they will send you £40/50 per week for food. A weekly amount might be easier to negotiate than a lump sum at the start of each term. Explain to them that your loan doesn't even cover your rent and that you might have to drop out of uni and return home if they can't help support you.

Why can't your parents afford to support you? Is there a specific issue?

Sorry to hear you’re feeling this way! Try contacting your university’s student support services about hardship funds or financial aid—they might offer grants or short-term loans. Also, check for part-time jobs on campus through your university’s careers service. Hang in there! 💛

Hi xmilliex,

Sorry no one got back to you sooner. Im sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing. I was in a similar position in my first year as I received minimum maintenance loan and no financial assistance from my parents.

I saw this post was hashtaged LJMU, so I’m assuming you could be a John moores student? If so, there is lots of support you could access!

Firstly, I would definitely apply for the LJMU Student hardship fund. This is means tested but against your income, NOT your parents (so you would likely be entitled to it). The average claim last year was £716 and this money does NOT need paying back. While it’s obviously not a permanent solution it could help with your rent payments. You can apply for this once a year for the duration of your course. You can access the application form through your ‘My LJMU’ app.

If you are looking at finding a part time job to help with finances, I would contact the UNITEMPS department at uni. The team are very helpful and friendly. If you email them and create an account on the website they can help you find part time work. This can be as few or as many hours as you want. They also pay above minimum wage. If you would rather speak face to face, you can visit them in the Student Life Building Monday - Friday.

I would also contact the student advice and wellbeing team (SAW). They will be able to advise you on any financial issues and make you aware of any financial assistance available to you. You can book an appointment with them through your ‘My LJMU’ app also.

I know it can be difficult but remember you are not in it alone, there is so much support available to you so please access it! Make the most of your tuition fees and use all the LJMU services.

All the best

Tilly
