Choosing a college at University of York

Hi!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to firm my York offer for PPE, but I'm not sure what college to apply to for accommodation. I'm looking for one that's got a reputation for being lively and social, into nightlife etc, also one that gives you the option to share a flat with lots of people. I'd also like a pretty even split of boys and girls, I don't know if that varies a lot.

What are the stereotypes of each college these days, as I've heard they change year to year? Also, which is considered to be more lively, east or west campus?

Thanks!

Hi Caitlin!

All of our colleges have a pretty lively atmosphere thanks to the amazing work of our college reps. The only stereotypes that I know at the moment are that Alcuin is the more quiet college (because its separated from the rest of campus by the library), James is the sporty college (although all colleges have their sports teams)(this is just because they are next to the sports centre), Halifax has chaotic vibes but they have flats with up to 20 people so that maybe explains that, and Constantine is the "posh" college. We have a total of 10 colleges (5 on each campus) and they are all evenly split with boys and girls. Accommodations are mixed gender however I believe you can specify if you have a preference. The colleges themselves don't organise the nights out, those are organised by the student union and societies. Very popular for example is sports night on Wednesdays.

In terms of the two campuses I would say campus West is more lively mainly because it is closer to town so students are more willing to make their way there rather than all the way to east. That being said, the bus services take people to east so it is more laziness than inability.

I don't think you should worry too much about what college you end up in because ultimately they all offer the same or very similar experiences and its only for 1 year because after that you find private accommodation with friends in town.

I hope this helps!

OP have you toured any of the accom and liked any one in particular? Or can you visit to wander round, it does give you a good sense of what goes on.

My daughter did Open Day and Offer Holder day, each time we saw different accom. The recent Offer Holder day in particular was very useful because we got to see students in the rooms and got to chat to them - small sample size admittedly. Each college also does have its own nearby facilites (eg Langwith seems to be organised around a central cafe/bar). And each has a different feel (except maybe Anne Lister / Kato, which are very new and felt almost identical)

Of the West Campus ones Alcuin was the most peaceful but all of East campus seemed pretty quiet too, though not in a bad way. East is noticeably further from town, not sure how much impact that has

You may have seen York puts its accom into Bands, the cheaper the Band the more folks you share with. Again my daughter likes the idea of sharing with many so prefers Band 1 Band 2, for her its just a bonus that those are cheaper
