S6 Subject Choices

I want to do chemistry at uni. I am currently doung Higher chem, maths, english, french, psychology. I have done nat 5 physics but no biology. I don't really want to do another science next year apart from advanced chem but my teacher told me i should take higher physics, but tbh I really don't want to. How important is it for uni to have done higher sciences other than chem?? I know they're not required but would it help a lot?

Hi,

You do not need any other sciences at higher, but Adv Chem and Maths are recommended and liked by unis.

If you took 3 adv highers in s6 (chem, maths, and then another subject you feel you'd do well in) then you could be considered for 2nd year entry to some programmes. You'd probably need a mix of A's and B's in the adv highers for this. Regardless of whether you want 2nd year entry, adv chem and maths are recommended, so I'd still take them (or at least chem).

If you just want to do one or two adv highers in S6 and take another higher or two, then another science might be nice - but not necessary.

Either way, I'd pick subjects you know you'll be able to get good grades in. While physics might seem 'more relevant', if you think you'd get a better grade in another higher or an adv higher, then I'd pick the subject you'll do better in.

At the end of the day, you want to pick subjects that will get you the grades you need
