Help picking SQA highers!!

Im in s4 rn and technically I’ve picked my highers but there’s lots of time to change subjects rn since we obviously don’t start 5th year till after exams I’ve picked English, math, bio, crash chem (my schools letting me do it since I need to do adv aswell for dentistry) and art but I think I want to switch art for physics it was always between art and physics so it’s not like this is from nowhere but I picked art because everyone around me told me it was the easier option and 3 sciences would be to hard for me to manage but I genuinely think art is gonna be hard for me too and idk if my work is good enough to get the results I need plus I could art in s6 as a higher and it would be less pressure and make 6th year more fun. Lmk you’re thoughts I’m stuckkk

The best advice I can give you is to take business management as it’s a really easy subject to learn and looks good in the future because the skills are transferable in the workplace

Not for dentistry, they don't care for things like that.

I think physics is the better option, although it will be very tough with triple science at higher.

Some courses don't accept art as a higher for dentistry so you'd have to look into the specifics. It is usually rejected as it is seen as a non-academic subject and not a 'proper' subject which is unfair but not wholly untrue.

Mainly, your grades don't matter more than if you get all A's or not, so pick the subjects you need (which you have) and then the ones you think you will get an A in the most (or forget dentistry😔). Things like the UCAT end up mattering much more so once you have the grades they are forgotten about as everyone else applying also has all As.

Best of luck, any more questions, I'll try my best to help!

To be honest, I am doing triple science Highers - it is fine if you know how to manage your time - to me it feels like any other subject - but you're crashing chemistry, so it will be significantly more difficult for you. If you enjoy physics, take it - I did it with my friends and have loved it so far 🙂

Honestly, art and physics are both difficult in different way, physics is more academically challenging, but art has a LOT of coursework that will take up your time.

I’m also in S4, but I want to study medicine in uni. For highers, i’m going to take English, maths, biology, chemistry and French. I was planning on taking physics or art too, but then I chose French because I find it a lot easier, meaning that I will have more time to devote to the subjects I care about and that are relevant to my future.

Do you have any subjects that you like well enough and require less effort? Because I would recommend considering taking one of those, especially if you’re already crashing a subject which will make it a lot harder.

Both physics and art are very difficult higher. I guess art could be considered easy to learn/pass but it takes up a LOT of your time.

I mean I do really well in history but I don’t enjoy it I’m good w j memorising content which is probably why I get good results but I find it boring and the only other subject I do is French do I don’t wanna do that 😭😭

Omg it’s way harder than it seems plus this year I managed my time for art fairly well and still finishing all the coursework before deadlines was such a struggle! I barely handed in stuff before the deadline and my final was kinda rushed at the end 🥲🥲

Omg I would rather not do art then because it’s so hard to get an A for higher apparently atleast that’s what my teacher told me 🥲

I agree, Higher Art is not as easy as it seems and requires a lot of work because of all the coursework. I literally did not finish everything until the very last minute, your work has to be of very high quality to even get a C or B, without mentioning all the all nighters I pulled and the many after school supported study sessions I attended 🫠. In summary, Higher Art is so rigorous so if you enjoy art and if you are good with time management, take it, otherwise choose something else.

I also recommend higher business for dentistry!

Hey! - I did a pretty similar course selection, I took higher chemistry, biology, maths, English and modern studies and then in S6 I crashed physics, psychology and retook art after dropping after S4 + Adv Chemistry, If you feel you'd enjoy physics just as much as art & would be more beneficial to take for dentistry/less pressure, I would do that & then art in S6 - I did art in S6 as I wanted to do it more so for fun and not have to stress over the result and found with my sciences it gave me a great change, its a lot of coursework but if you have good time management its very manageable!

Hope this helps! (:

definitely ask your teacher. I know someone that did nat 5 maths and higher maths the same year, however it might be different since you want to do adv and higher
