Enrolling to do a second degree

Hi there,

My friend has an adult nursing degree however, they have decided that they want a change of career. How would they be able to undertake an undergraduate course in primary education? Please can someone explain the process including ucas points, loans etc? They are wanting to know what the process would be. Thank you in advance

Hello, I did not do a complete career change, but I'm switching my degree in my first year of university. I think they would need to apply through UCAS. It is relatively simple as they just need to make the account and fill in the relevant details. Perhaps finding a reference might be difficult, but I think they can ask anyone they know in a professional capacity. I also reached out to the university I wanted to apply to to ask for extra information, so they can do that as well just to be sure. I sent it to the university's admissions enquiry team and I got a reply in one working day. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!!

Firstly, if they already have a Degree, they will not be eligible for any funding (loans etc) as Education is not an exception course.
HOWEVER, they do not need to do a Primary education undergraduate course to become a teacher. They can apply for a PGCE (and this will be eligible for funding) with QTS (Qualified teacher status) which will enable them to teach Primary (assuming they also have GCSEs in Maths, English and Science). Point them towards; https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/steps-to-become-a-teacher as this has all of the information and links they will require.

Hi Lauren,

From what I understand if your friend already has an undergraduate degree they would be eligible for funding for another undergraduate course unfortunately. However, to become a qualified primary teacher in the UK you are not required to have an undergraduate degree in primary education, you just need any undergraduate degree. To achieve QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) there are a number of routes your friend could take. Some choose to complete a PGCE course which is an unpaid route into teaching and includes lots of hands on experience with children as the course has a large placement element. If you chose to do a PGCE you will also be expected to do a set amount of university based hours each week. Alternatively some choose a school based salaried route through various organizations such as Teach First. These can be more competitive that the PGCE course, as they are paid, however are a brilliant way to gain experience and build your CV. These salaried routes often require you to have previous experience working with children, either in a paid or voluntary capacity so this may be something for your friend to consider. Hope this helps and best of luck to your friend!
