Help with compelling personal reasons!!

Hello!

I am looking for some advice regarding applying for compelling personal reasons.

I have used two years of my student finance funding. I am currently in the first year of a course right now and I am really struggling with my mental health, and I don’t think I am going to be able to pass this year because of my mental health struggles.

I want to restart university in September this year but I am unsure how to go about this. Can I apply for compelling personal reasons for my tuition to be paid for the upcoming academic year or can I only apply for compelling personal reasons once I have finished the current year of study? Or if I fully drop out? Or can I still apply for more funding next year and stay enrolled on my current course meanwhile.

Additionally, my reason is significant mental health struggles. Will this be enough? I plan to get a letter from my doctor, my course leader, and student support backing up that I have had mental health struggles. However, I don’t know if this is enough. Can someone advise what exactly should be in the letters from these people, what needs to be said for student finance to take the claim seriously.

Also, in my own cover letter should I describe what I have been feeling and how it’s impacted me? I have test results and prescribed medications as further evidence if that sort of thing would be required.

Finally, how do I apply for compelling personal reasons? Is there a date that it ‘opens’ for applications or can I submit this anytime?

Sorry for so many questions but figuring this out has been very overwhelming for me and I’m really struggling currently.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Daisy, If you could not complete your course year due to a compelling personal reason, you may be able to receive an additional year of funding if you are able to provide acceptable evidence of this. Where applicable, we recommend the evidence is signed and dated and confirms the reason why you could not continue with your studies and when this took place (must be date specific).

We can accept photocopies of medical evidence from a GP on headed paper, letters from your university on headed paper, letters from Social Services, clergy or professional person on headed paper and copies of a death certificates and/or a birth certificates. This list is not exhaustive and any evidence that may help your claim for Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) should be sent to us for consideration. This evidence can be uploaded via the online account once the new application has been submitted. I have provided a guide (link) for to show how to do this: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/student-finance-england-how-to-guide

If you are planning to apply for this coming September, the new applications are so we would advise to make the application at that time, then once the application is active, upload the CPR evidence so this can be added into the full application review. The standard timescale for this is 6-8 weeks and from the review we will be able to provide you with an update. Thanks, Stephen.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Can I apply for compelling personal reasons for the academic year starting September 2025 currently while I am enrolled on a course? Or would I have to drop out of my current university course to be able to apply for another year of funding? Or will it affect how likely I am to be granted the funding if I'm applying while still on a course.

Also, I have only spoken to my course leader once about mental health struggles, however I have a letter from my GP to give the university. Will this be enough evidence? I will also get another letter from my GP to back up that my mental health struggles have been going on for months.

Hi Daisy,

What course and university are you wishing to Start in September? Would the course be full time? How many years will the new course be?

Was your previous study all full time?

Thanks,
Claire

Hi,

I would be wishing to study History at Newcastle University or Northumbria University. Both courses are 3 year long full time.

Previous years of study was 2 full time first years.

Hi Daisy,

You can apply for your new course online right now if you want: the 25/26 applications are open right now.

Also, yes - you can apply for CPR right now even if you're still enrolled on your current course. A letter from a GP is normally acceptable so long as it clearly confirms what happened and the effect this had on your studies.

We'd also suggest including a letter from yourself just confirming what happened and the effect this had on your studies.

Thanks, Graeme
