Lancaster/York/Cardiff/Warwick for MSc cybersecurity

International student from India here, got offers from Lancaster and York for MSc Cybersecurity for the September 2025 intake. Still waiting from Cardiff for their MSc cybersecurity and technology course which is partnered with pwc so should be a good course as well. Wondering if I should apply for Warwick also as their Cybersecurity management course is among the best in the world. Need help in deciding which would be a better choice among these.
Thanks in advance !!

When you ask "which would be a better choice among these", what do you mean by "better"? What are your criteria?

In terms of graduate employability, reputation and course content, which would be a better choice ?

In terms of international reputation (which I assume is what's of interest to you), based upon the surveys which are used to help compile the QS World University Rankings (for Computer Science and Information Systems generally):

Academic Reputation (academics around the world are asked "which universities are demonstrating academic excellence?")
University of Warwick: 64.0
Lancaster University: 63.9
University of York: 59.7
Cardiff University: 47.7

Employer Reputation (employers around the world are asked to identify institutions they consider excellent for the recruitment of graduates)
University of Warwick: 72.4
Lancaster University: 64.0
University of York: 63.2
Cardiff University: 62.3

The above covers reputation of the subject area generally - undergraduate and postgraduate - but not Cybersecurity specifically. I'm not aware of any employability data for postgraduate degrees, so I'm going to use the data from Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey (as published on The Uni Guide) for the most appropriate integrated masters course (e.g. a four-year MEng or MSc in Computer Science).

Average annual salary
University of Warwick: £42,000
Lancaster University: £35,000
University of York: £34,000
Cardiff University: £31,000

(Note that students often stay in the local area to find work, so the above can reflects the economics of that area rather than the "value" of the degree to employers.)

Employed or in further education
University of Warwick: 92%
Lancaster University: 90%
University of York: 95%
Cardiff University: 87%

Employed in a role where degree was essential or beneficial
University of Warwick: 97%
Lancaster University: 92%
University of York: 91%
Cardiff University: 90%

Top job areas of graduates
University of Warwick: Information technology and telecommunications professionals (73%) / Business, research and administrative professionals (12%) / Business, finance and related associate professionals (5%)

Lancaster University: Information technology and telecommunications professionals (86%) / Business, research and administrative professionals (6%) / Sales, marketing and related associate professionals (3%)
University of York: Information technology and telecommunications professionals (91%) / Sales assistants and retail cashiers (5%) / Engineering professionals (3%)
Cardiff University: Information technology and telecommunications professionals (67%) / Information technology technicians (9%) / Business, research and administrative professionals (6%)

I'm going to ignore "course content" as it's not measurable. Have you read-up on the content of each course? Which do you prefer?

In terms of course content all 4 unis are very well structured with a mix of practical and theoretical courses but Cardiff’s program is partnered with pwc which might give a huge benefit on industry exposure.

Hi @Dhakshan
Congratulations on your offers to study MSc Cybersecurity!
I'm currently studying a masters at Lancaster, and have really enjoyed my time here. Lancaster is a collegiate university so as a masters student you would join graduate college which is a community on campus that runs lots of events and support for postgraduate students. Further, the careers service at Lancaster is excellent with lots of support in finding and applying to graduate jobs,
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hi!

Congrats on your offer.
Since it sounded like you value employability a lot, I wanted to tell you a bit more about the careers support at Lancaster (as it was personally the main reason why I picked this university, personally).

Firstly, it is up to you whether you want your dissertation to be more academic or if you want to undertake an industry project with a partner company (think of it as an integrated placement). Lancaster has been focusing on Cyber Security research quite heavily and its Cyber Security course is well-established, so it has a lot of partner companies within the industry. This way, you don't only get valuable real-world experience and industry exposure, but also a potential chance to secure a job offer upon graduation.

Secondly, the central careers team is incredibly helpful. Thanks to their 1-1 CV and cover letter support, interview and assessment centre workshops, and mentorship scheme, I was able to secure 4 internships in my 3 years of studying Computer Science at Lancaster. And, thanks to the ERS (Lancaster Employment and Recruitment Service), which provides students with micro-internships and part-time roles within the university, I was able to work and earn alongside my studies.

Lastly, the degree is quite practical and hands-on, embedding relevant real-world topics and research.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to provide insights into career support at other universities, so I would encourage you to do more research in that regard.

Best of luck - I'm sure you will make a success of whatever course you choose!

Polina,
Lancaster University SCC Student Ambassador.
