Relationship Status

Hi there,

I was in a four year relationship with my ex partner but we broke up in April 2024.

When we were together I used to spend a few days a week at hers and a few days a week at my family friends house where I'm a lodger for a room. I don't have an official tenancy contract with my family friends where I have my own room.

When applying for SFE do I need to put single or separated?

I initially put separated on my first SFE application but then they were asking me for a divorce certificate when we weren't even married?!

How would SFE even know if someone is married, do they check on a database or something?!

Hi there, as to the marital evidence, for this we would be seeking confirmation that you are single. We would normally request the completion of the marital status declaration (MSD) form (this is just a form that tells us of the separation and with this we would request evidence. This evidence can be Formal evidence (Decree Nisi, Civil Partnership Conditional Order, Solicitors letter that confirms current marital status. etc...)

If the however the separation was informal we can request additional evidence to resolve this such as:

A Council tax bill that shows one of these discounts:

25% single person occupancy discount

18-20 still in education

Single person discount

Sole occupier discount

Only one adult resident

If none of the above are available, then you can submit a copy of the Tenancy Agreement/Mortgage Statement and two utility bills, (in your own name only) dated within the last 6 months (gas, electric, water, council tax, landline etc.) with the required Marital Status Declaration form.

In the worst case scenario where no evidence is available we would request the completion of the MSD form to provide as much information as possible, and this will be down to the assessors own discretion if acceptable or not. Thanks, Stephen.

Yeah my issue is we were never married it was just a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship and I used to visit
her occasionally so why do I need to prove we are separated if it's been over a year?

It's difficult for me because I transfer a family friend a certain amount each month and he lets me live in a room in his house as a lodger. The bills and council tax are all in his name not mine.

Can I not just resubmit a new SFE application as single instead of separated seeing as it wasn't
a marriage nor was I staying with her permanently? I just used to visit her a few days a week.

Hi there,

Your status based on what you have advised above should have been single. We understand its easy to make a mistake, but so we know its correct, we need you to complete the Marial Status Form if you have been sent this or write a letter to explain the mistake.

We would advise to send evidence to back this up. If you have any of the bills in your name only as Stephen advised above send a copy with the letter and upload online in your account. This link shows you how here https://youtu.be/rOMx_EG5JWk

if you don't have any of the evidence write in the letter why and the assessor will review and confirm if accepted or not.

Thanks,
Claire
