Film for Welsh or English

Hi
I am a fluent Welsh speaker. I am debating on staying and studying filmmaking/ film production in Wales or in England. I'm deciding between Aberystwyth, University Of South Wales, and the University of Salford. Would there be any benefits for attending a Welsh University because of the connections to S4C where I can put my Welsh language to use, or to Salford, where they have close connections with Media City?

i know little about the welsh connections, but i'm currently studying film at leeds beckett. i applied for south wales and salford, and many people i know applied as well. i got an offer from both, i had a friend who ad an unconditional from salford but i do not know a single person who went to salford following the offer. i think the connections are minimal, and i would much rather be in usw or aberystwyth, as i know many people who went to both. i would probably choose usw over aberystwyth just due to the location.

Hi there,

Great question and it's one that can only really be answered by our Student Ambassadors studying film who can tell you about their time on the course and our Film lecturers who can talk you through the opportunities available in Cardiff for Welsh-film makers.

Have you already applied? You can chat to both at our upcoming Applicant Experience Day on Saturday 5th April https://www.southwales.ac.uk/getting-started/applicant-experience-days/

Hey @Catstella23 ,

Its great that you're looking thoroughly into your options. I'd say its worth having a think about what you find most important - obviously having and using your Welsh language skills is important to you, so it might be worth seeing what opportunities you would get at Welsh universities to use them, and see how you feel about those as options?

Your connections and facilities as a part of your degrees are important too - for us, we're based at both our main campus and MediaCity for Film Production, so you have a range of studio and sound facilities at our MediaCity campus (and are surrounded by the BBC, ITV and a range of production companies), and then a large, customisable studio/warehouse-esque space on our main campus, where you can work with our teams to create sets/shots that suit you best in a larger space. Our academics are all industry connected, so if you have interests in certain fields and want to look into short term placements and internships they're in a great place to support and advise (and are just really nice people to boot!). We're keen as a university for students to follow pathways that interest them, so if you were keen to still work more in Wales and put your language skills to use you could look into short placements/internships in Wales/on Welsh language productions, as we're not a huge distance from the northern edge of the Wales/England border.

Obviously we're not a Welsh university, so your options for using your Welsh language skills will be limited here, so I'd advise visiting a range of options and seeing how you feel about each pathway. Its important you're happy at the university you choose, so shopping around to find somewhere that will make you excited to study your degree is really key! We offer a travel bursary for our Open Days where you can claim back money for your travel based on the distance you've travelled to get to us, so its worth looking into support that you can get for these kinds of days!

I hope that helps - let me know if you have any queries, and I'll be happy to advise
All the best,
Becky

If you're passionate about Welsh culture and want to use your language skills, studying in Wales (Aberystwyth or University of South Wales) could be great, especially with connections to S4C and the Welsh media scene.
However, if you're aiming for broader industry connections, especially in mainstream media, the University of Salford and its proximity to MediaCityUK could open up more opportunities in large-scale productions. It all comes down to whether you want to focus on Welsh-language media or work in a wider, more diverse media environment!
Good luck with your decision!

Hi there,

My name is Mostafa and I'm a current student and ambassador for Aberystwyth University. It's good to hear you're considering us!

At Aberystwyth, we pride ourselves for being a bilingual university, this means that communication must be in both Welsh & English, for example things like posters, all student e-mails, banners, signage, etc. must be in both languages. Some modules are also available in the medium of Welsh, this will vary from course to course though so please check with the department directly ([email protected]).

We also have our Pantycelyn accommodation which is a catered, Welsh-medium residence, which is available for Welsh speaking students and any students who are looking to learn the Welsh language, and the home of UMCA (Union of Aberystwyth’s Welsh Students) - which you can learn more about here: https://www.abersu.co.uk/teamaber/welshcommunity/

At Aberystwyth University, the Film and Television course has a strong reputation and offers a great balance between creative production and academic exploration of media. What’s especially appealing - especially for Welsh-speaking students - is the strong connection to the Welsh-language creative sector, including S4C, BBC, BAFTA Cymru, and other media organizations. Being based in Wales opens doors to opportunities specifically geared towards Welsh-language content creation, which is something that sets Welsh universities apart. Aberystwyth itself has produced graduates who go on to work in TV, film, radio, and digital content both in English and Welsh. On our campus and situated next door to the Department is one of the largest Arts Centres in Wales, which regularly presents screenings, talks, master classes, exhibitions and film festivals.

Beyond the course, Aberystwyth has a very active Students’ Union, with over 90+ clubs and societies, so there really is something for everyone - whether you’re into film, drama, sports, music, or volunteering. Notably, the Scriptwriting Society host workshops and trips with professionals from different areas of the industry. You can find all of our societies here: https://www.abersu.co.uk/teamaber/societies/

If you have any questions about the course, societies, or life at Aberystwyth in general, feel free to drop me a message - I'd be happy to help!
