Why isn’t the government planning to introduce universal income?

AI is getting smarter and smarter and will soon replace people and unemployment will go through the roof

We're broke, highest national debt % in 60+ years. Coming out of nowhere with something as dramatic as UBI could potentially crash our economy Truss style again.

We're still very much at the stage where it's on you to make yourself employable rather than the Government to compensate you for a job you haven't yet lost.
Because despite successful pilots in other parts of the world which proved that UBI did not significantly increase unemployment nor cost a significant amount of money to the state when accounting for savings from policing homelessness etc, and actually noted the greatest uptake in UBI was among students and parents who had recently given birth, the UK government and public both hate the mere idea of a poor person potentially getting something for nothing so much they would rather spend more tax money on paying to police and provide healthcare to homeless people than to allow such a policy to be implemented.
