SFE - changing university course

Hi all,

Just for some context, I am retaking an A-Level whilst studying at university and decided I would reapply for a different course at a different university for the year after since I hate my current university. I ended up getting an offer, however contingent on me moving my B to an A in the subject when I retake. I haven't formally dropped out of my current university, as I was thinking I would wait until results day and when my place at the new uni is confirmed to do so.

I am therefore unsure how to handle my SFE application and if anyone has any guidance in doing so? Do I need to apply as a continuing student but changing university/course? Will SFE notify my current uni and next uni of this as I don't wan things to be mixed up.

Thank you for reading

Hi there,

if you're on a course now and haven't withdrawn, this can impact the application for next year. When will you know for sure what course you're doing/ withdrawing from our current course?

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire, thanks for your response! I would know on results day since that would be when I get my new place confirmed at my new uni on my new course. Would that be too late? I was thinking of withdrawing from my current university as I am confident about the A Level exams going well and bumping my grade up and I will do that if it makes my SFE application easier?

That's not too late, don't worry.

Feel free to re-apply online whenever you can and you can indicate your new course there, even if you don't have a confirmed place yet.

You can always change your application again later if you need to.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme, so does that mean I can apply for my prospective new university now, without my place being confirmed? And if I am still at my current university after August, I can then switch it to that?

That's right, yes - you can update your application yourself at any point before September.

Thanks, Graeme

Would I have to apply as a new student, given it is a new course and university and that I would be starting from 1st year again?

You only need to apply as a new student if your university tells us that you've withdrawn.

So, are you completing the year with them, or have they told you that they'll class you as withdrawn with us.

Thanks, Graeme

I will most likely complete the year with them, however if it is easier I will withdraw depending on how I am feeling pre-exams.

If I do decide complete the year with them however, how would it work when applying? Will SFE notify my current uni and next uni of this as I don't want things to be mixed up.

If you withdraw, you might have to pay back part of your maintenance loan immediately. For example, if you withdraw 10 weeks into a 16-week term, you would be required to repay 6 weeks. If you are liable for any accommodation fees for the rest of the academic year, it is best not to withdraw until August. It will be easy to update your SFE account online following results day if you get into your new course. You should then inform your student records office at your current uni that you are formally withdrawing.

I can see you were advised below on what the outcome would be. Just to say as well if you are looking to withdraw or change university then you need to contact them and ensure they notify us so we can update this accordingly on the system. Thanks, Jason
