uni of birmingham international relations/ politics

hi all,

i am thinking of firming my uni choice to birmingham (or notts) but i am honestly worried due to its ranking and future job prospects. if anyone has studied international relations in birmingham or takes another course, would you say it is worth firming? honestly, i have heard great things about the school so i am not too conflicted but it would be great for anyone to share their experience

Hey there,

While I didn't go to UoB or Notts, I am originally from those ends (Brum!), and decided to study Politics and International Relations elsewhere. Generally, job prospects across graduating from different universities is similar across the same course title/specification (e.g. Politics and IR in this case).

I can attest to the diverse array of transferable skills and job opportunities Politics and International Relations will allow you to explore upon graduation - from recruitment, to local government, civil service, home office, foreign office, work within NGOs and humanitarian international organisations.

What really matters on top of the degree is how you apply and use your degree throughout your course and afterwards, through volunteering, part-time work, getting involved in writing, and so much more university can offer beyond just the degree. That's what is going to set you out from the crowd!

So definitely consider the careers support offered by the universities, extra-curricular opportunities and so on. But also, the location, if you like the look of a university - campus, and the city/locality - and feel comfortable there to thrive, that is very important, which is where Open and Applicant Days are key!

I hope this helps somewhat and all the best for the future
