Sqa Subject choices (Advh/H)

Not posted anything on here before but was just looking for advice on options for subjects for me going into 5th year. I sat my n5s a year early so im sitting advh and highers next year (s5) and i want to go into something along the lines of medicine/neuro/psych.
Subjects!!
S3- n5 A english, B modies, B bio, A music, b compsci & A higher maths (sat the n5 year before)

This year (s4) - higher english, modies, bio, crash chem & art , AH maths
(highers predicted aabba i think)

I had to crash subjects due to columns but i was planning on taking chem anyways because i know some courses need it. I want to take advanced art and bio next year but i don’t know if its a stupid idea taking art, i really enjoy it but I don’t know if it will help in applications. Other subjects i was going to take were higher physics, accounting and lvl6 criminology. All of them are crash highers but i didnt know if taking more sciences would look better on an application. (Could just do a higher in music or compsci now that im thinking abt it)

Sorry for the big long rant just looking for anyone that could help, thankyouu!!!

I am planning on applying to uni in s5 and if i dont get any offers back that i like would stay on to s6 but I don’t know if applying twice will effect me getting into a course or not.

I'm... confused.

Are you saying that you're taking Higher Biology, Higher Chemistry, Higher Modern Studies, Higher Art, Higher English and Advanced Higher Maths... all in S4? Five Highers and an Advanced Higher? In S4? Plus, you did Higher Maths in S3 Nat5 Maths in S2? Not to mention your other Nat5s in S3.

Forgive me, but I find that very difficult to believe. In S2 I was learning the skills that would form the base of what I did in Nat5. I don't believe anyone in my school could sit Nat5 and pass in S2. Why would it be any different for you? Most people don't even choose the Nat5s the wish to sit until S4. I don't mean to sound rude - I do hope I'm not coming off that way - but I'm just sceptical about how realistic it is. I'm sure you can see why though. I can offer advice but I just wanted to make sure I understood everything correctly beforehand.

I didn’t know if i should mention my year or not. not wanting to sound like a brag or anything, just background on how i could stay to s6. All of the subjects are right, in s1 my maths teachers noticed i was getting 100%s on my tests and finishing weeks worth of work in a period or two so she decided to try seeing how i would cope with level5/n5 work. I picked it up and the second half of s1 i spent 1 period each week in with s3s studying towards n5 when they were in s4. Then in s2 i spent 2 periods a week in the class and taught myself stuff at home, they wanted me to try the prelim and i got a 71% so they spoke to my headteacher about it and let me sit the exam that year too (i got an A in the exam too). Because they were planning on letting me sit higher in s3 they didn’t want me missing out on my classes for maths so they wanted to see if i could cope doing some n4/5s early and i sat all n5s plus the higher. Hope that helps sorry i just wanted to highlight it without sounding cocky

I think advh chem or bio would be great, but you don't necessarily need both - it's just ideal. I'd pick chem over bio, if you do chose between them.

I highly encourage you take level 6 criminology as well.

I'd say the best subject combo would be advh chem, advh bio, level 6 criminology, + another higher/advh. This other subject doesn't have to be in anything related to what you want to study. I'd pick something you know you can get a good grade in, regardless of whether it's relevant.

Thankyouu, im debating taking chem to advh cause ive seen that thats more wanted than bio but i just dont know if i could commit to it 🥲 i think if i was to take something like music it wouldn’t be like that difficult to get a decent grade in, well probably easier than accounts anyways

Ah, I see! Thank you so much for laying things out to me like that! I hope you can understand why I was a little sceptical at first, aha. But also hope I didn't come off as too rude or brash! If I did, I apologise. That's very, very impressive and I expect you put a lot of work in so well done!

As for your actual question, if you're interested in medicine then I'm pretty sure you have to take AdvH chemistry or it's at least strongly advised - though I'm not completely knowledgeable about medicine entry reqs as it's not something I've ever wanted to do. In terms of taking AdvH art, I think you should if it's something you enjoy! The last thing you want is to be forcing yourself to sit through a course that you don't enjoy. Most Scottish universities don't even ask for AdvHs in the first place - unless you're doing something like medicine or veterinary medicine - and considering how much time you'll have to dedicate to project work, etc, I personally think it would be best to do something you know you like.

To be honest, that's most of what I have to say. Choose things you'll enjoy and that you think/know you will do well in. Perhaps do a bit of research into the courses and universities you're interested in and use that to help figure out what would be best for you to choose. If you have a careers adviser or something similar in school then you could also speak to them about this. It may sound a little silly but do whatever feels best for you. I hope this helps a little!

Thank you! I’m liking biology a lot more than chemistry so thats why i would rather that for advh but i might see if theres anyone i can talk to about requirements. If i do end up needing the chemistry i could always stay to s6 and sit it then

Hi, I'm back! Moving schools would definitely make sense then!

I'm going to use medicine at Glasgow uni as an example, but most medicine entry requirements are quite similar.

Glasgow wants two B's at advh, but doesn't state which subjects they want them in. However, they do state needed highers (chem, bio, and physics or maths) so I'd pick at least one of these. I know you're already doing advh maths, but I'd still pick 2 more advh.

I'd say that as long as one of these advh is chem or bio, you'll be OK. If you pick both that's even better, but since you've already got maths you only really need one other medicine/neuro related subject. If your preference is bio then I'd go with that.

For your pysc, you've done more than you need to already. I'd still recommend level 6 criminology though, as that would look good and is relevant. I'd also recommend advh mods for this.

So, for example, you could take advh bio, art, and mods, and level 6 criminology.

Even if you just take advh bio and art, and level 6 criminology, you'll be great!

I was also wanting to take ah mods but its in the same column as art so its making me wang to stay til s6 because i really enjoy it and ive been averaging a1/2 all year. I think i might stick to 2 advh next year and take 1 or maybe 2 highers. The school just changed to offering 6 columns because if people fail their higher math they will still have 5 highers, so that means i could do 2ah 2 higher and a level6 with a free. Usually they only let 2ah and 2 lvl6/higher for s6s but they said its alright for me to still sit 5 subjects. In s6 ill definitely take like 3/4 though. Thankyouuu for ur advice!!

If it helps you out I'm currently doing Higher Accounts after doing National 5 last year (A Achieved) and whilst yes it is definitely the hardest business subject, If you have good logic, problem solving skills and are good with excel it isn't too difficult.

Im between taking admin or accounts but i thought that accounting would’ve been a better idea as my school currently doesn’t offer it so i could try something new and that i have good logic/number skills thankss )

oh wow it’s amazing how you’re basically two years ahead of other pupils your age. Whilst ur academics are insane for your age, I don’t think you could get in to medicine with Bs in nat 5, especially because one of them is in biology. Medicine also does not accept resits… Most Scottish unis only look at your top 6 nat 5s but it seems those aren’t all As and you have said neither are your predicted highers this year. Although you are doing amazing, sitting highers in S4, I don’t think you could get into medicine with any more than one B in your highers, and without at least 6 As in nat 5. Neuro & psych do seem like great options though. For reference I have gotten into medicine so I have an idea of the grades and stuff required. Good luck !

Well you've definitely got it easier in terms of what subjects you can do for higher & advanced higher since you've got some extra years for it.
If you think sciences will be better on your application, then get some more in S5 ahead of the application, and then there's less pressure on S6.
I also advise that either way you stay on through S6, leaving a year early just means that the social aspects of uni are more difficult, and you'll start working after uni a year earlier, which really doesn't mean that much when you'll be working for decades.
If you enjoy art then I really recommend you do the advanced higher, it's much more free than the higher or nat5, though there is far more work required in it. It also doesn't have any exam, which means depending on how many other subjects you do you might only have 2 exams (that's my situation this year).
I really don't think you should have any problems with your uni applications, you're doing great work for S5 level, never mind being in S4.
I hope any of that was helpful and good luck!!!
