Switching Courses

Hello everyone,

I’m wanting to do audiology degree. I’m hoping to stay in London so I am considering doing speech and language therapy. Then do a masters, in audiology. I’ve gotten offers for law but I don’t see the point of going into a course that I don’t like. Does anyone think I’m able to switch. I’ve gotten offers from City, Surrey and Exeter.

I just feel really confused, even if I just take a gap year- I’d still be confused cause I overthink. UCL audiology degree is too hard to get into, so masters would be easier to get in if I do underrated instead of wasting a year. Would the masters be considered same as the bachelors in UCL.

I’m just really confused! Please help me!

Can I just check that I've understood you plan correctly? You applied to study Law and have had offers from City, Surrey and Exeter. However, you've now changed your mind and would rather study Speech and Language Therapy, with a view to then taking a Master's in Audiology. Have I got that right?

The first potential flaw in your plan is that I see no evidence that either Surrey or Exeter actually offer a Speech and Language Therapy degree. Perhaps they do, and they've just hidden that fact well. How have you established that they offer this course? Do you have a web link that you could post?

The second issue is that although City do offer a Speech and Language Therapy degree, it's pretty competitive. The stats on UCAS show that they only tend to make offers to about 40% of candidates. That being the case, I'm not entirely sure that someone who originally applied to study Law would be an ideal candidate for them. I might be wrong, but I suspect you may be out of luck here. Especially as we're now several weeks after the equal consideration deadline. By all means contact them and ask, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. :frown:

I recommend that you take a gap year and apply for an audiology undergrad next year. Healthcare courses are vocational and you are expected to have shadowing and public facing work/volunteering experience when you apply, and you are usually interviewed. Having missed the equal consideration deadline, it is very unlikely that any SLT courses will still be open to applications for 2025 entry. Do your current A level subjects meet the entry requirements for audiology?

Also bear in mind funding as the UCL masters course is expensive at around £26k for the two-year course for tuition. The masters loan is around £12.5k in total (not per year) and there is no additional funding to cover living costs. Taking an audiology undergraduate would make better financial sense.

It doesn't matter where you study a healthcare degree as your future employers won't care so look at other options to UCL.

Unfortunately, I do not as my subjects were based on law, but I do have more than enough GCSEs to get in. I thought of doing an access course but UCL only accepts the Birbeck course, which can not be funded by the advanced learner loan. I don’t have much money saved up and it would be unlikely to fund that course myself. I’m stuck and just feel so lost. I will be staying with my parents so I was hoping to save up money to masters if possible- maintenance loans and the bursary, unless I want to stick to Speech and language therapy jobs. I have health issues so it is harder for me to travel far from London, considering I have a better support system at home.

Hello, thank you for your honest reply. I truly needed the reality check, I’ve messed up my path and I knew I had to reroute somehow. I was naive thinking my law offers would allow me to get the S&L course in other unis. I’ve contacted City and their replies are too vague or simply confusing. I’ve asked if I need to send a personal statement to back my new choice and they said no? They just told me add a new choice through UCAS.

I might have to take a gap year- I do not mind it but I’m just worried that I would waste a year if I’m going to end up doing speech and language therapy rather than audiology degree as a undergraduate. All well though, thank you for your reply!

Have you done any science A levels? If not, there are science foundation years for those who haven't done the right subjects. It's worth asking UCL if they offer one. Also look at Middlesex uni as it offers audiology with lower entry requirements. They might offer a foundation year or be more flexible with Access courses:

A gap year is not a waste especially when you want to pursue a healthcare course. Get the shadowing experience you need and find a public-facing job/volunteering position such as in a supermarket, cafe, care home, special needs school, charity shop, etc. Boots and Specsavers offer audiology services so look for part-time jobs there too. Also consider apprenticeships - there's nothing in London at the moment but keep an eye on the NHS website:

I do feel that person was abit harsh on you, your not out of luck if you really want something it’s achievable have u tried UCAS extra. Maybe look at other unis I understand u want to stay in London but maybe it might be worth travelling a bit more if ur not feeling taking a year out. Although taking a year out could be beneficial you could learn skills and once you’ve recieve offers you’ll feel so much better Good luck

Hello, I’m so sorry for the late reply. I’m probably going to go on a gap year because my mental state is not at the best. My grades aren’t looking too good either 🤧. I’m just try to get by so I’ll probably be better overall next year. Thank you for the reassurance though, it’s really sweet of you.
