Hey I’m not a student yet but I’m starting there in September. Something that has helped me has been watching youtube videos posted by edinburgh students and also talking to current students on the edinburgh website. To pick accom I made a spreadsheet and rated all the accommodation in different areas (cost, closeness to specific buildings, nearest shop, appearance, etc) and the ones that scored the highest were the ones i applied to :-)

i have heard the best way to make friends there is through freshers events and societies! i think making friends within your accom would be a good way too you just gotta put yourself out there. for me i wanted to pick accoms with good social spaces to make it easier to meet people!

They start with people who are UF and go through them in order of who applied first. I sent my application in a week ago so I haven’t had a response yet, but I’ll let you know when I get mine so you can have a better idea of the timescales :-) I do think it’ll probably be april/may time rather than soon unfortunately

What were the top 5 accommodations on your spreadsheet? (I should make my own because that's such a good idea)

Mine were Salisbury Court, Holland Annexe, Brae, Reigo Street and West Mains road.

I had a preference for bigger amounts of people and en suites, and i focused a lot on distance from central and kings buildings as well as the nearest shops, so my choices might be different from yours. Depends on what you’re looking for :-)

Sometimes you don’t hear back about accommodation until summer

Just to offer some perspective, I'm starting my PGDE at Edinburgh this year, having already done my undergraduate and masters back in England a few years ago. I am commuting from Glasgow so will not even be based in Edinburgh and I can assure you that as someone who is very keen to have an active social life at university, I am not at all worried. Having previously gone to university in a new city, knowing no one, this is exactly what societies, course social events, etc. are there for. I am personally looking forward to meeting my coursemates but I am aware they are essentially a random sample; societies and sports clubs give you the chance to meet people who already are guaranteed to have a shared interest/hobby. Depending on your course, you may also be very likely to meet like minded people. From experience of going through university during COVID and working in a job where work from home is common and in a way encouraged, it's absolutely on you to take advantage of the social opportunities. Don't rot at home and watch your lectures online (I've made this mistake), get up everyday, get dressed and make yourself feel good and go out, whether it's to lectures or just to the library to study. Your home is for relaxing and leisure not for study or work—and the only way you can guarantee yourself to not meet anyone or have any new experiences is to spend the day at home. Put yourself out there and feel good about yourself and your efforts will pay off. Feel free to message me ☺️
