Uni housing

I am really confused here. I know everyone says book uni 2nd year housing super early as early as January of your first year, but during January I had no clue who I was going to live with. I now know who I will mostly likely be living with second year so we have started looking for houses of course first problem is that their simply is not enough housing for everyone I knew that coming into this. However the second problem is that everyone I have called has told me that I would need to move in basically almost immediately but I can’t even do that till late may because of accommodation contract and even then we would barely be able to afford to pay the rent over the summer. However are people booking houses to move into for may-August??

For accomodation which is targeted at students, the landlord wouldn't expect tenants to move in immediately. They would have tenancy agreements with start dates in August or September, as their current tenants (students) won't be moving out until early July.

So it sounds like you're looking at "regular" flats and houses, which are potentially vacant right now, or which will become vacant soon. So, unsurprisingly, the landlord wants tenants who can move in quickly.

How are you searching for accomodation? Have you tried googling for "student accommodation area"? (Where area is the name of the town / city / area you want to live.) They key word here is "student".

Yes I have been searching for accommodation that is for students or student friendly but still they want me to be available from basically right now -may. I think maybe it is because I am looking for 2 bedroom places and maybe they are uncommon for students as they go for bigger places ? I don’t know . But the places I am looking at are for students. Thank you for the response

How very strange. Perhaps you're right and it's the size of the place which is impacting when they expect you to want / need it. I know loads of people who signed contracts last November (a couple of months into their first year) for tenancies starting this coming September (i.e. 10 months later). However, those were for larger properties.

Hi there @Tulipinacup1 I totally understand how difficult it is to find a suitable house as a group of students, I had many ups and downs searching for houses in my first 2 years at uni 🤕. I tend to use platforms like Open Rent, Right move or Zoopla when searching for accommodation or contacting a local estate agency for student houses. I will also suggest contacting seniors who are graduating who can put you in contact with good landlords or to take over their tenancy once they leave! Although it is always recommended to start your search early, things don't always work out the way we plan. More houses will be listed on the market eventually and if not you might just have to live slightly further away.
Regarding your question, the move in date in entirely dependent on the landlord and location. Some landlords and agencies release listings very early on 5 months before the start date while others might choose to list properties closer to the start date. I personally searched for houses in Feb only to move in August/ Sep period.
A last resort is to contact your uni's halls of residence to check for any available student accommodation for 2nd year students! I hope this helps and I wish you all the best is your house search! 🤗
