insurance choice - architecture or not?

I'm trying to figure out which unis and courses I want to apply for this year, and as far as I can see the grades required for most unis are AAA. Obviously I need an insurance uni/course and I was wondering whether I should bother applying for architecture courses that require lower grades? If I apply for jobs in the future will I get overlooked if I've been to a less reputable uni? Or am I better off applying for something like structural engineering or interior design instead as my insurance?

Hi there - it depends on how committed you are to architecture, but I feel like it might be better to ask different questions. For example, a degree in structural engineering will likely require grades around the AAA mark anyway, and the ones that don't would be from less reputable unis, which would lead you back to square one. These subjects are quite different from architecture - even interior design tackles very different content, though would usually require lower grades as a potentially artsier course.

Keep in mind that safe options are safe for a reason - lower entry requirements will usually mean they're less reputable, and will have a higher acceptance rate (it's kinda what you want as a backup in the first place). Hopefully your exams go well and you won't have to go to unis that you prefer less, but it's an inevitability for everyone. Also, you're even less likely to get an offer from a course different from architecture, as your application would be more geared towards it - if you're applying for a different course at a more reputable uni, it will likely be more competitive and they might sense that they're a backup in your application.

I would say apply to architecture at a uni with lower entry requirements (and therefore perceived less reputation I suppose) as a safety choice, and try your best to get the grades you need for the unis you want. If you want to apply to a different choice outside of architecture because you genuinely want to, however, that's absolutely fine if you can tweak it. Less reputable unis don't bar you from getting a job - architecture is strictly regulated in the UK, so you'll largely be getting the same skills and knowledge as required by RIBA, so employers won't be discriminating against you really. Good luck 🙏
