Course funding for NHS Course - have used my entitlement

Hi, I have previously started University 8 times (some were part time) and never finished so SFE have stated I am no longer entitled to funding even part time STEM subjects. Anyway, I really would like to look at going back full time doing speech and language therapy and I know the rules are different around NHS courses - are you able to get a tuition fee loan for NHS courses regardless of previously (incomplete) studies? Thanks

Hi there,

Can you please tell us exactly what we've said in terms of your previous study? Have we told you that you're not entitled to funding at all going forward, or is this only a certain amount of time?

Thanks, Graeme

“Because you’ve previously studied in 8 academic years and started 7
different courses without appearing to complete a full course of study
we’ve had to consider whether you’re still eligible for student finance.
We’ve reviewed your account and you can’t get any more student finance from
us.

We previously confirmed this to you 15/04/2020“

I cannot find anything in my account of correspondence from 15/04/2020 to know the wording of that one.

I know that my future course choice of Dietetics is an exemption course but If the answer is no in my unusual circumstances, Can I apply for compelling personal reasons without making a new student finance application? I really need to know if I’d be able to secure funding before applying as I do not want to spend a year doing an Access to HE course if I cannot then go to university because of lack of finances.

Okay, based on this it sounds like you may be refused for funding, but there's certainly no harm in trying because you're wanting to study an exception course.

If you want, you can make an application online now and this will be reviewed by the assessment team: it will be up to them to decide if you're entitled to any further funding.

Thanks, Graeme

Am I able to apply for this year, in order to see the decision? Even though I have no place as of yet as I need to do an access course - but again, to reiterate, I don’t want to go to college for a year if I then cannot study the course. So basically - can I make an application for funding for a course I’ve no intention of studying yet to see the response? Is there a way to make a speculative application? Thanks

Yes, that's right, you can - for example, you can always cancel the application later if you need to.

This way, you'll know for sure if you're entitled to any funding from us.

Thanks, Graeme

My only concern with this is on a previous course I was given funding to then have it removed half way through the year which meant I had to leave the course. I have just done an application form for this year (which I’ll cancel closer to the term start date) as per your advice and I’ll see whether I get approved but because of that previous experience I don’t wholeheartedly trust SFE’s response. Is there anyway in which to get a definitive answer on this is there any team I can email or anything?

When your application gets reviewed our assessment team will tell you the definite answer, that's correct.

Thanks, Graeme
