Nursing placements (Edinburgh Napier)

I am applying for Adult Nursing at Edinburgh Napier and I am looking for insight into the structure and frequency of placements. My main concern is making it work financially, and how I would juggle a part-time job while on placement.

I am in my 30s and I just can’t see how students are able to live on the bursary without burning themselves out trying to hold down a part time job?

All student nurse and midwives at all universities acros the UK spend 50% of their time on placement. It's 2300 hours of each across 3 years - approx. 770 hours' theory and the same on placement each year; 20-21 weeks of each. Placements tend to last 4-10 weeks at a time, university dependent. Your best way of getting insight into how often/how long students at Napier are on placement is by getting the information from the department - email them.
As for a part time job - this is where 0 hour contracts are brilliant. I had a 0 hours contract as a bank HCA when I was a student nurse; this is the most popular way of student nurses supplementing income. Some student nurses work in pubs and retail.

hi

Good luck with your application for adult nursing at Edinburgh Napier university.

I will echo what @Emily_B has said regarding placements etc. generally the placements are average of 7 weeks blocks but can vary depending on how the university has scheduled them into your course work for the academic term.

I would probably recommend you consider Napier university and ask them if they can tell you roughly what the scheduling is for both placements and at university.
When I was at Napier university I was doing a average of 7 weeks block of placements and then a 7 week block of university study's ( theory and practical etc) they are spread roughly equal through the academic term year ( you'll have holidays assigned to you around Xmas and New year, Easter time and at the end of the academic year plus any other holidays that the university have scheduled in as well ( you'll have approx 6/7 weeks holidays) - unfortunately you only have these at the end of each term as not allowed any holidays outside of the a academic year coursework that they have scheduled.

Part-time jobs while at university doing nursing - it's doable when you are at your university study weeks as can work weekends or the odd evening, but when you are on placement it's finding a employee who's very flexible with students who works a variable shift pattern but yeah you can do it.... Emily mentioned HCA bank nursing which is very ideal for student nurses because you can pick and choose your shifts.
I worked part-time in retail throughout my time as a student midwife at Napier because I was lucky enough to have a decent manager who was very flexible with students like nurses and I worked my contractual hours on my days of which was okay for me but maybe not for everyone. I managed on my NHS Scotland bursary ( and yes it was a lot less than the current amount students are getting) and never used loan's etc as I was prepared due to saving prior to starting my midwife degree.
