best maritime engineering/naval architecture university

Hello everyone,

I am a french student going to uni next year to study maritime engineering/naval architecture.

I have already received an offer from the University of Southampton for a master's and bachelor's degree in naval engineering, an offer from the University of Newcastle for a master's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and an offer from the University of Strathclyde for a master's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. I've also recently discovered the Bachelor of Yacht and Powercraft Design and the Bachelor of Yacht Design and Production at Solent University, and I've still got one more application to make to UCAS.
I'm really hesitating between all these programmes, do you have any opinions or advice to give me? Have any of you done these courses?

Thank you very much for your answers !

Good afternoon @keke83
I just wanted to provide you with some information in regards to the courses here at Southampton Solent University - as you may already know, we have been providing maritime education for the last 70+ years and welcome students to the university/Warsash Maritime School from all over the world and have many specialist facilities on campus (such as our towing tank!)

On our website you can view course information as well as contact details for our lead academics and insightful graduate stories (such as Elodie's which you can view here), all specific to the yacht design/yacht production courses.

If you haven't already, I can't recommend enough going to university open days for all of your choices to see what feels right for you. Our next open day is in April where you can speak to academics and support staff, take a tour of the campus and meet current students - https://www.solent.ac.uk/open-days

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly if you have any queries.

Best wishes
Carly

Hi!

Congratulations on all your amazing offers. You’ve clearly worked hard and have some fantastic options in front of you! I’m also an international student, and I know how exciting it is to choose the right university before moving abroad.

I’m currently studying at the University of Southampton, and if you’re considering Maritime Engineering, I really encourage you to take a close look here. The University of Southampton is home to one of the world’s leading centres for marine technology, with a strong international reputation. The courses we offers are taught by leading academics who are also involved in cutting-edge research.

The Maritime Engineering programmes focus on giving you a solid understanding of ship science, marine structures, fluid dynamics, and propulsion. What’s unique is the strong emphasis on both theoretical foundations and real-world applications. You’ll work on projects that simulate industry scenarios, use professional software, and develop skills in design, analysis, and innovation. These experiences prepare you well for careers in ship design, offshore engineering, or marine renewables.

You’ll also benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities. The programme is delivered at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus, which features advanced design studios, towing tanks, and one of the largest university wind tunnels in the world. These facilities are shared with Lloyd’s Register, which further strengthens the university’s ties to the maritime industry.

What I personally love about Southampton is how well-balanced the student life is. The city has a lot going on. From shops and entertainment to cultural events and festivals—and it’s very close to London, just about an hour away by train! Plus, it’s a seaside city, which definitely adds to the charm, especially for someone interested in marine and yacht engineering.

Lastly, I will say that the support for international students is fantastic. Whether it’s academic guidance, settling in, or career planning, I’ve always felt supported here. The university also has a dedicated Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise team, which helps students prepare for life after graduation with one-on-one advice, CV workshops, networking events, and more.

Let me know if you have any questions—I’d love to help! Whatever you choose, best of luck with your studies and future career!

Warm regards,
Junfan

Hi @keke83 🙂 Massive congratulations on your offers! You've got some great choices here, and it can definitely feel overwhelming when working out which is best for you.

I'd have a think about which factors are the most important to you. Consider things like modules, facilities, student life and career prospects - as well as the University you're going to and its location. Different campuses and cities have different 'vibes' - so if you love all of the unis you have offers from maybe this is another way to help your decision making.

If you're able to attend offer holder days those will hopefully be useful. I know that we are still offering these virtually if you're still based in France and can't travel for them. If you can't find anyone on TSR, you might be able to reach out to current students on platforms like Unibuddy too, or by emailing the department to ask any questions you still have 🙂

We're a really popular choice for Naval Architecture courses, and you'd be joining the largest Engineering faculty in Scotland ⚓️ We have amazing facilities, including our wave/towing tank, virtual reality lab and full mission ship bridge simulator. We also have a 33ft racing yacht located on the west coast of Scotland for the students to use! We're known as the place of useful learning and you'll find a lot of our Engineering degrees give students amazing hands-on opportunities.

Congrats again on your offers! Hope this helps a bit, but happy to answer anything else I can help with. Good luck!
