Resources for Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Hi there! I am going to start at sixth form this September. I was wondering if you know some resources or good text books for A level Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Hello, I quite like the CGP textbooks for these subjects. I personally don't tend to use videos though free science lessons can be quite useful, especially for cramming biology(!), and seneca learning is quite good for reviewing content as well.

I have bought these books!! I 100% prefer reading books than watching videos hahaha! Do you know others that could be helpful?

Wow you've started preparing quite early! These are the only books I use, but I know some schools may give you one or a subscription to kerboodle which has textbooks as well.

Hey! That’s exciting—starting sixth form is a big step, and it’s great that you’re already looking for resources!
For A-Level Physics, some solid textbooks include AQA Physics by Jim Breithaupt and Advancing Physics by OCR. For YouTube, Physics Online and E Rintoul explain concepts really well. If you prefer online textbooks with worked solutions, OpenProf or ordinary free online textbooks check out OER commons and OpenStax are great places to check out.
For Chemistry, Chemguide (website) is a lifesaver for explanations, and Allery Chemistry on YouTube is great for walkthroughs. The A-Level Chemistry by AQA textbook is also a good reference.
For Biology, A-Level Biology by CGP is concise and to the point. Miss Estruch and Biology with Hazel on YouTube are super helpful for understanding tricky concepts. Websites like Save My Exams and Brainscape (for flashcards) can also help with revision.
I’d definitely recommend starting past paper questions early—even if you don’t feel ready yet, they help a lot in figuring out what examiners actually want. Hope this helps, and good luck with sixth form! 😊

Hi!! Thanks so much for your reply and advices! What are you referring with starting past paper q early? I am currently doing past papers questions, and it is 5 months left to start sixth form hahaha. Is it this good?

Oh wow, you’re way ahead, and that’s a good thing! Yeah, I just meant doing past paper questions alongside learning instead of saving them all for later. Since you’re already doing them, you’re definitely on the right track!

There’s some great advice in this thread. Personally, I found a few key websites really useful.

For physics, Tutor Packs was my go-to and it has worked examples which helped a lot. Physics & Maths Tutor was great for topic-based questions. When I got stuck, I used YouTube—especially Physics Online and Science Shorts, which explained things really well. Personally I like reading more too so only used YT as a last resort.

For biology, Save My Exams and Physics & Maths Tutor had almost everything I needed.

Once you’ve made your notes, start practicing exam questions by topic—that’s the fastest way to learn. Then, when you’re confident, move on to full past papers. I’d recommend doing legacy papers first and saving the newer spec papers for later. Tutor Packs also has a great bank of past papers.

I didn’t take chemistry, but these resources should still be useful.
