Access to He course

I am currently studying an access to HE and I was jsut curious I have tried contacting unis but I haven’t received the response yet. So once I complete it say I apply to uni in a few years time or switch course using my access for my UCAS pints can I ? As some say access courses are valid for 5 years only after than u can’t use them to apply to uni. Is this the case or have I understand it wrong??
Thanks

Technically, an Access to HE Diploma is a Level 3 qualification with no expiration date, just like A-levels or other degrees.
However, some universities—or specific courses—may require a more recent qualification, typically completed within the last five years.
Ultimately, it’s a judgment call, so it’s best to check directly with the admissions teams.

Ahh thankyou I understand why they’d want it within the last five years because the skills you’ve picked up are more fresh but do I think say I started a course at uni didn’t like and then changed half way thru that course they’d let me using my access course ucas points or would they think I’ve already applied once using it I can’t again , sorry if this is confusing

If you decide to switch courses half way through, then I think you should be fine. Since you have been studying up until that point, but again best check with the admissions, as depending on the course/universtiy they might insist you finish your current degree first.

Also, I would check if you are still able to get student finance for the second degree, if you haven't finished your first one. FYI You definately cannot recieve student finance for the second degree if you completed your first one, but you can apply for the maintenance funds.

I have taught on Access for over 10 years.

Firstly, the vast majority of Universities accept Access to HE learners - large amounts of learners who do nursing degree's at the Manchester universities have done an access course - they like learners with a bit more life experience.

Secondly, you have done the right thing in speaking to admissions tutors, they should reply to you. For some career pathways just an Access to HE program is not enough. There are professional requirements for some careers that you have Level 2 english and maths too, plus science for midwifery. A lack of GCSE's on application may be used to filter you out, even though you might be doing the level 2's beside the access course.

Thirdly, some universities are strict on the 5 year life of the diploma because they need up to date knowledge in areas such as medicine and computing. They could potentially ask you to demonstrate recent study if you left it 5 years, it might not necessarily be the access program again (depending on the subject area)

Thanks so much I do have my GCSEs so they aren’t the problem, I have worked as a teaching assistant. I plan to start uni this year but if I want to change my course I’m assuming they would let me. I spoke to Bradford uni and they said it’s dependant on the course if they’ll accept u after a longer period of time.

Thank you for the great work you do as a teaching assistant 🙂 I've taught for about 11 years and I couldn't survive without a great team around me
