Pharmacy, pharmaceutical science and pharmacology

I'm in Year 13 and want to pursue a career in pharmacy, but I've been offered courses with a preparatory year. Is the foundation year the only way for me to become a pharmacist?

I’ve heard about doing a degree in Pharmaceutical Science and then a one-year Master’s in Pharmacy (MPharm). Would this be a faster or better route? Also, how does Pharmaceutical Science compare to Pharmacology in terms of career prospects and relevance to pharmacy?

I’d really appreciate any advice on which path is better for becoming a pharmacist or exploring related fields.

Good evening,

A foundation year is a great way to cover the basics before starting university; it also means you will have an advantage when starting your 1st year, as you will have covered the key elements of academic writing and other key skills that other students have to learn. The Foundation year will help you to thrive on your actual course.

The other option could be going through clearing. However, Pharmacy is a very popular course, so there may not be very many options in Clearing.

At the University of Reading, there is an ambassador scheme via unibuddy, where prospective students can message current uni of Reading students. There is an MPharm 2nd-year student who I recommend you message. Her name is Athena, and you can find her account here. She will be able to give you an inside perspective on the pharmacy degree and answer any questions you may have about the course.

I hope this helps and that you have a lovely time at university.

All the best,
Ella

"one-year Master’s in Pharmacy (MPharm)."
There is no 1-year 'conversion' course for Pharmacy.
GPhC regulations mean you must complete the full 4-year MPharm.

If you want to be a Pharmacist then a Foundation year plus 4 year degree is a long haul, but worth it if you want it badly enough. Pharmacology is a totally different career - make sure that you understand the difference : Choosing between Pharmacy and Pharmacology
