Ask a Current KSA Student at Kingston University

Hello Everyone!

A current Kington School of Art (KSA) student here!

I am currently in my second year studying fashion promotion and communication :rave:

Me and many of the other Kingston TSR reps study at KSA and so I will invite them (@Kingston Yasmin, @Kingston Eve, @Kingston Zhi En) to introduce themselves, share what year they are in and what course they study here at Kingston and help me answer your questions!

Feel free to ask us any questions you may have here, whether it is about life at Kingston, accommodation or societies. Whatever is on your mind about Kingston we will do are best to answer.

I would love to hear from you what course you will be studying this September or would like to study in the future? and follow with a question for us

Hey so I am considering accepting my offer for the product and furniture design course at Kingston, I am currently away travelling so can’t attend the open day or anything which is such a shame as it would help me a lot and I have never been to Kingston either so I don’t know what to expect!
I have lots of questions so I’m just going to have a rant and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help me with the questions and my decision!!

I also have an offer from Chelsea (UAL) for the same course however I think my interests best align with the course at Kingston however the location and the reputation of UAL tempts me.
However I now think that living in Kingston has its benefits: It’s its own area away from London meaning it’s got its own community etc while still having access to London. (How easy is it to go into London from Kingston to see friends/go on nights out and explore, also is it common for KU students to visit London regularly or do most students not bother as it’s a lot of effort?

I am also very stuck between choosing my halls. Seething Wells or Middle mills?
Seething wells isn’t as close to knights park compared to middle mills but it isn’t too far away, I would be tempted to buy a bike and cycle to knights park along the Thames if possible but I know in winter it’ll be tough to get out of bed to do that. And also I’ve heard the buses go to a campus a ten min walk away ( how often are they from seething wells?) The accommodation here looks amazing I would love to have the privilege of having a small double bed and an en-suite and also share a kitchen with 7-10 people sounds perfect for me! ( also are there many art students at Seething wells?)
On the other hand Middle mills is 1 min away from knights park and most of the students at middle mills are art students which I would prefer as then we can bounce ideas off eachother and just generally relate more. Also the people you share your flat with have a big influence on your uni life for the rest of the year so this is quite a big factor for me.
The rooms however are single beds and don’t have en-suites which is a shame but I think having a sink if the bedroom would help a lot as then it’s possible to get ready for bed in my room. I’ve seen online a toliet can be shared between up to 4 people and a shower 5 which is quite a lot which worries me. There is no common room but the campus is close so I don’t think it’s too much of an issue.
Basically I’m not sure if I should choose the halls that offer the comfort aspect of having my own space and seething wells or go for the social halls with more art students that are close to town and would has a better location and generally more convenient. And how bad can it really be sharing a bathroom…

I’ve never been to Kingston before and I won’t be able to visit until I get back from my travels but that will be around July / August time and I need to reply to my offer before then. What is Kingston like to live there? How expensive is it in general and for groceries and going out? ( how much is a pint  How is it compared to London, is it quiet and relaxed or busy, are people generally happy?

Do you or do you know anyone on the same course (Product and furniture design) and what do they think of it, what’s the work loads like, the lectures like, do they enjoy it etc…

I know I have more questions somewhere but I can’t remember them all and I know this is a lot to read so thank you for taking your time if you’ve read this far! I would really appreciate any info that could help me as there is so little online from students about accomidation and Kingston student life.

Thanks again !!

Hey there, regarding your question about accommodation, personally I would not worry too much about living slightly further away if you prefer Seething Wells 😄 The free Intersite Uni Buses comes about every 30mins from 8am to 10am (you can view the timetable on your Kingston Uni phone app once you have a student email), and Kington School of Art's campus is only 30mins walk away along the river Thames. Some of my friends also use a Lime or Forest bike to go around too!
We also have a few Open Days happening in the summer in June and July! You should definitely drop by to have a look at the campus facilities and walk around the surrounding area 🤗 Although Kingston is more affordable than central London, the costs of living has gone up in recent years but there still ways to save money and shop affordably! There are also many beautiful green spaces such as Richmond Park, Bushy Park, Hampton court to explore 😁 I hope this helps.
