UCL or Bath for Chem Eng

Hello, I am a Yr13 doing my a levels and finally have gotten all my offers. I already know I want to put Imperial as my firm but struggling to decide between UCL and bath as my insurance. I also applied to Loughborough and Southampton so if you got anything about those unis that I should take into consideration please let me know.

Thank you

Both are excellent choices and you really can't go wrong with either. Reputation wise, UCL is superior overall (it's a target for finance if you decide to go into that whereas bath is a semi-target), but I believe Bath has a better reputation for engineering specifically. Both are wonderful though so it doesn't matter too much. Also, the experiences of being at both unis is very different so you should take that into consideration. Congrats on Imperial offer btw!

I mean im doing my a levels this year but for UCAS im predicted 3A*s and an A for further maths AS. I attended chemistry study days and participated in the STEM challenge, as well as, reading articles on what I really found passionate and interested in which related to chem eng

Thank you! I just heard that the student satisfaction in UCL is quite low but it had quite a high reputation as well. Bath seems lovely too and especially is good for engineering.

Hey, thank you for replying, do you think such high predicted grades are necessary for chem eng at UCL? What about your application do you think made you look the most ideal and made you stand out to them? Thank you!

I mean best to at least meet the grade requirements that state on their website. I think with your personal statement, its more of a journey to why you wanted to become a chemical engineer; stating what initially piqued your interest and how they led to you wanting to know more about it etc. Related super curriculars would be helpful ig but extracurriculars too since they want to see what skills you have and what skills you want to develop especially at uni. I recommend looking at the uni course and see smth that you find interested abt e.g., particular topic or design projects and how a skill u gained can help but dont make it specific to one uni.

hope this helps

Hiya there OP,

Apologies, I'm coming to this thread a bit late!

Just thought I'd say huge congrats on your offers from those fantastic unis!

Its good to hear you're sure on your firm. In terms of your insurance, as you know its got to be somewhere where you'd genuinely like to go to. So which out of Bath VS UCL has the course you'd most like to do? The one with the modules and focus points you'd find more interesting?

I'd also ask you to think about where you'd feel most at home? Bath is quite a small, cosy city - theres a lot to do despite its size but its a very different feel to London, which will be a lot more buzzing and busy.

And how about placement opportunities? The huge majority of Bath's engineering courses offer both BEng and MEng versions as well as the chance to do a placement year. We have one of the best placement schemes in the country, and doing one I found was a lot of fun, and gave me a lot of great experience for my CV and taught me a lot about the working world. If this is the kind of thing you'd be interested in then Bath would be a solid option because of the comprehensive support you get with finding the placements.

I hope this helps a bit - but both Bath and UCL have fantastic reputations and high quality teaching and so I'm sure whichever you choose you'll have a solid insurance choice 🙂

Best of luck this year!

Hey,
First of all, congrats on getting all your offers that’s an amazing achievement!

Just to share a bit about Southampton: it’s a really solid choice and definitely worth considering. It’s a Russell Group university, so it’s known for strong teaching and research. Students often say the campus has a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and the facilities, especially for science and engineering courses, are really up-to-date.

Southampton also has great career support there are lots of placement opportunities, career fairs, and industry links to help you get real experience while you study. And if you ever need a break, the city itself is very student-friendly, more affordable than London, and it’s close to the coast, which is perfect for relaxing days out.

Whatever you decide, you’re already in a fantastic position. Wishing you the best of luck choosing your insurance you’re going to do great!

Best wishes
Junfan
