EPq will never secure anything, some colleges don't even look the EPQ. It's your 3+ main A levels that matter. You could compare an EPQ to extra credit. My supervisor said that it can come in handy for example during interviews, to prove you're truly passionate about a course and are knowledgeable. Many people do it because they enjoy researching tasks or their interests, if lengthy research isn't your thing I'd choose an AS instead.

I mean the only place I see useful for an EPQ is during interviews, if they ASK about something related to it. Or during personal statement. Or if you applied to oxbridge and they wants written work. But the thing about EPQ it is easily substitutable with another essay competition or something completely unrelated. For me EPQ is quite inflexible, you need teachers to assess you, very rigid 5000 word structure which I do not like. But it is all personal preference
