Student finance: one parent living abroad who doesn't support me financially

Hello, I was filling out the student finance application for 2025/26, but wasn't 100% sure on what certain things meant

My father lives abroad and has never lived in the UK, and does not support me financially. Do I need to put into the application about him living abroad and will it mean I get a lower amount despite him not supporting me?

It also asks about where he has lived in the last 3 years, so would I put that he's lived there from the 1st of September 2022 to 1st of September 2025 as he has lived there way before 2022 and will continue living there after 2025?

My Mum and her partner are supporting me financially, so I was wondering whether or not it would be based on their income alone as we all live together? Or would my father's income also be accounted for (he is EU and now lives outside the EU)?

Sorry for asking so many questions I'm just confused...

Hi there,

We base this on your parent you live or have most contact with. If your mum lives with a partner then we'd have her and her partner support your application so you don't need to give your dads information. Thanks, Jason

Great, so can I say no to having a parent living abroad then? Does it make a difference that he is the parent I received my EU status from? My mother is a British citizen. Also when filling out where I’ve lived in the past three years, I’ve lived there for longer than 3 years and we are not planning on moving, so do I just put the start date as 01/09/2022 and to date as 01/09/2025 to cover the 3 years? Thank you!

Yes, you'd put down the three years from 01/09/2022. No, it wouldn't as we'd used her and her partners information to assess your application. Thanks, Jason
