Dentistry application

Hi, im in year 12 and im thinking about switching from medicine to dentistry , I would like to know the things that ill have to do to strengthen my application for dentistry , because a lot of the extracurriculars i have done are more medicine focused. I got 988877665 in my GCSEs , a 6 in chem , 7 in maths , 8 in bio and English language - what universities are extremely gcse heavy for dentistry? If i get really high predicted grades and a high UCAT , will that still give me a chance at dentistry , because I’ve heard that dentistry is more competitive than med???

Both med and dent are competitive. Get some dentistry work experience asap. My daughter got some by asking her dentist at her check up appointment 😂 but email every dentist (personally if you can) and orthodontist and dental hygienist etc that you could possibly get to.

This document is really useful for a getting started guide on which dental school to apply to. Things change all the time though so double check entry criteria/scoring etc on the official uni websites before finalising any choices. Good luck

Ps. My daughter did dentistry work experience and mentioned it on her med personal statement to show that she had considered other health careers and yet knowingly chose med, so even your med work experience is not wasted. Any volunteering with vulnerable people that you are doing is just as valuable for dentistry as med. It is still a people-focussed, health profession so lots of the qualities you have seen/done, team working and the public facing contact you have had, will still apply.
